Shocking news coverage of the recent ethical shortcomings of a former network anchor has the Public Relations Society of America members talking about ethics. Working as a public relations agent, Mike Snyder was banned by PRSA for life after reports he used online aliases to attack opponents and promote clients. Dallas PRSA Chapter Ethics Officer, Ms. Samra Jones Bufkins is our guest to talk about ethics and why individuals and business owners should be aware of ethics and public relations.

Questions covered on this show:
1) Social media and ethics: (a) the basics you should be aware of; (b) PRSA standards;
2) The APR designation in public relations and what it means to public relations professionals;
3) Avoiding pitfalls in social media by working with experienced publicists who practice ethically;
4) Smart social media outsourcing: a few tips on how to select and work with the right professionals.

Samra Jones Bufkins, MJ, APR, is a well-respected public relations professional and professor at the Mayborn School of Journalism with the University of North Texas, whose lecture materials certainly focus on ethics in social media and public relations. Her career in public relations includes strategic communications for the healthcare, environmental, energy, petrochemical, shipping and electricity industries, encompassing public relations, crisis communications, issues management, fund raising, internal communications, governmental relations and occasional generalized troublemaking, mostly in the Houston area. She has worked for agencies, non-profits, a state agency and Fortune 500 companies, and continues to consult on public relations and social media.
