In my book, A Loving Approach to Dementia Care, I share perceptions and approaches to help the caregiver whom is experiencing and processing grief.  The show today, however, will be talking about the individual who has advanced dementia symptoms and at the end of their life, teaching us that the death story is just as different as the birth story, and it is necessary to customize and honor these differences, just as we must do throughout the entire dementia care journey. Today we have a very special guest , Heather Lynn McGuire, who is a “Soul Midwife” . ( www.yourmidwifeattheendoflifecom ) She will be sharing a very different perspective-that of how she supports the dying and their families in achieving a peaceful and dignified death.  Just like the Dementia Whisperer brings comfort, sweetness and wisdom to the dementia care journey, Heather brings the same to the bedside of those at the end of life.  Many of Heather’s experiences she will be sharing are those who passed away from a cause of dementia, and families she helped along the way.   Call in today and join us in discussing this interesting topic.  The call in line is 1-929-477-1393-we look forward to hearing from you! 01:02:00The Dementia WhisperernoSoul Midwife,Alzheimer's,Dementia,Heather Lynn McGuire,Scott ClutheEach death story is just as different as each person's birth story. This month our guest is Chaplain Terry Morgan, author of five books entitled “The Chaplain’s Role, How Clergy Can Work With Law Enforcement”; “Life Celebrations a Guide for Funeral and Memorial Services”; “What to do When Grief Kidnaps Your Soul”; and “Starting With God”.   And today we are focusing on the book, “What to do When Grief Kidnaps Your Soul”, with a special focus on grief that a caregiver, either family or professional, experiences when they are dedicating their life to caring for a loved one, patient, resident or client with any cause of dementia. Chaplain Morgan conducts funerals and memorial services as a chaplain.  He has conducted over 2000 such services.  In his specialized services he had a very difficult time finding one good resource for helping with these kinds of services.  So he wrote his own based on his vast experiences.  Chaplain Morgan has requested my trainings for his chaplain students on many occasiions as he understands the need for all of those in his field to become "dementia-aware".  Join us today, call in with questions and help us to make the world "dementia-aware". The area of dining services is the largest operational expense and arguably the largest impact on resident satisfaction for the community. Most often, training in creating a quality dining experience through food preparation techniques, kitchen efficiencies, plate presentation and service standards are a low priority or left undone. Strategic provides dining service and hospitality management support according to the unique needs of our clients. The Strategic difference in the support delivered not only focuses on successful systems, techniques and tools, but improves the community’s outcome in quality dining experiences, community cost savings, increased resident referrals, as well as resident and employee satisfaction. And Strategic is reaching out to Ms. Wayman to discuss learning better dining with dementia strategies based on her program and book-A Loving Approach to Dementia Care! Every employee provides the kind of care we’d want for our own loved ones. In the best families, members of all ages treat each other with respect. They encourage and listen to one another. It’s where we rejoice, play and grieve together; where individuality is appreciated; where we learn and grow together. Safe harbor and unconditional love are found there. People thrive when they feel like part of a cherished family, knowing they’re surrounded by those who only want what’s best for them. It’s also a comforting, supportive and healing environment for those who are facing loss or illness. We understand that families often want to care for their loved one themselves, and may feel guilty if circumstances make home care an untenable or unsafe solution. Caring for someone with dementia means devotedly and patiently doing a hundred little things each day. Few care providers are trained to meet the challenges of dementia, however—and that is where A Loving Approach to Dementia Care can help. The book offers practical, compassionate advice on overcoming caregiving obstacles and maintaining meaningful relationships with loved ones who have dementia and memory loss. Author Laura Wayman’s program of care emphasizes communication, affirmative response, and empowerment—transforming the caregiving process from a burden into a fulfilling journey.  A practitioner whose strategies have seen great success in thousands of individual homes and facilities across the country, Wayman explains that denying dementia symptoms can make a hard situation worse and shows how understanding the limits and possibilities of the person who has dementia can make all the difference in the world. In this thoroughly revised edition, Wayman adds fresh caregiving insights, two completely new chapters that explore the dangers of denial by both caregivers and people with memory loss, and the "Dementia-Aware Guide to Caregiving"—a quick reference tool for advice on how to respond to specific difficult behaviors. In addition to offering valuable lessons on providing the best possible care, Wayman urges caregivers to take care of yourself - allowing you to have physical and mental energy to share with your loved one.  This book is an empathetic guide, filled with respect, calm, creativity—and love. 01:03:00The Dementia Whisperernolaura wayman, scott cluthe, the dementia whisperer,Alzheimers,Alzheimers diseaseIt's Finally here!    The Second Edition! Here is an brief excerpt from Ruth's story: Dad Has Alzheimer's But He Still Has Spunk The Hit Man (maybe a better title)   I’ve heard that ginkgo supplements might help to offset Alzheimer's. But, here should be a warning on the label to not take them unless you've had Alzheimer's long enough to forget how putrid they taste.  My father, Ken Fowler, fits into that category. He has Alzheimer's. When I visit him at the care home, I never know what to expect... Be sure and join us to hear more about this caregiver's dementia care journey! Aileen has been active as a harpist and teacher in the Sacramento Valley for over 30 years.  She is one of the founding members of Music Partners in Healthcare, and currently serves as President of the Board.   As a Certified Music Practitioner, she provides live therapeutic music at bedsides of patients in hospitals and in care facilities and currently coordinates a therapeutic music program at Kaiser Medical Center in Roseville. Music Partners in Healthcare (MPIH) is a Sacramento based non-profit that partners with local healthcare facilities, providing live therapeutic music at bedside to create an environment of dignity and comfort for patients. MPIH has recently (2016) started up seven new memory care programs at local facilities, where Certified Music Practitioners provide live music sessions, one-on-one for the residents.  Live music, provided by musicians professionally trained for this purpose, can meet the changing needs of a patient, ease physical and mental suffering, create a sense of community and opportunity for socialization, and reconnect individuals with past memories.  Practitioners are also trained in the appropriate use of music for acute illness and end of life, and are able to provide that service to memory care patients, as needed. Sometimes her patients would request something as simple as having a loaf of bread or quart of milk delivered, or to have someone spend just a few minutes in conversation to brighten their day. Kris recognized she could provide a solution-and today we know that the solution is  Comfort Keepers.  Comfort Keepers provides non-medical, in-home care services to thousands of people in their home settings by way of more than 700 franchised offices worldwide. Join us and hear from our esteemed guest, Kristina Butler, and discover the tremendous difference that in-home care makes in the quality of a senior's life. According to a professor at the University of Colorado at Denver, about half of those older than 85, or 5.2 million people, suffer from the disease. The current cost to the American economy is about $220 billion a year. Our guest today is Dr. Huntington Potter, who works in the Department of Neurology and the Linda Crnic Institute for Down syndrome, said that if the disease could be delayed, even by five years, it would decrease the cost significantly. Dr. Potter recognizes that as humans age, various health problems arise, but Alzheimer’s is one of the most expensive conditions because it requires around-the-clock attention in the middle to late stages. Through their work, Potter and his colleagues at the Anschutz Medical Campus have discovered that people with Alzheimer’s have, over the course of their lives, developed Down-Syndrome-like cells throughout their bodies. These cells have three copies of Chromosome 21 rather than two. Those with Down syndrome, who are born with these cells, typically suffer Alzheimer’s in their 30s and dementia in their 40s Join us in this intriguing conversation of hope through Dr. Potters amazing research.  Call 929-477-1393 today, or download and listen later. It's how we cope — denial masks emotions of grief, loss, fear and uncertainty.  What causes denial? Many things: lack of communication, distance, self-preservation, fear of the unknown and uncertainty about the future. Denial, however, leads to the continuation of a downward spiral and makes the diagnosis of dementia even more traumatic and difficult to face. At first, denial at it's best can be a healthy defense against admitting that your loved one has dementia. Denial involves not acknowledging what you see or hear and/or unconsciously negating what you see or hear. Denial helps you block the more painful aspects of reality. However, if denial continues too long, then it can be life-threatening to you and your loved one. Denial about dementia at it's worst can mean the withholding of essential treatment or development of a helpful care plan going forward. When family caregivers are unrealistic about their loved one with dementia's level of functioning and care needs, they put their loved ones at risk. "When my dad developed dementia, my mom tried to deny it and I tried to fix it. We both failed" We see things changing and notice the person losing the ability to do what they once could. Often we're reluctant to step in and take over as it may feel like we're giving up on the person or crushing their independence.   Today we will be talking about how to maintain a realistic outlook on your loved one’s care, and thoughts on helping your other family members do the same. Tune in and listen to our guest this show, Theresa Haleen, Business Development Representative for Interim Healthcare and owner of Assisted Living Options for Seniors share her perspective on denial.  01:03:00The Dementia WhisperernoDenial About Dementia is a Common Occurance From time to time, we're all in denial about various aspects of our life.
