As entirely non-verbal creatures, dogs rely entirely on pure primal resources for understanding the world around them. There are, of course, their senses with scent being the primary data source. Soon after are hearing and vision but above all else canis familiaris takes its cues from the energy with which the people and animals around it operate. Having a bad day? Feeling angry? Completely out of sorts? Your dog knows. And if you're already having trouble getting your dog to mind you, chances are unlikely that in this state you'll have any better luck. This is a topic we'll address more deeply in future episodes, but for today a quick hit and some tips. On today's show, two very different angles on that idea. First, Downtown Las Vegas is home to an array of businesses that are taking entirely new approaches to long-time industries. The 9th Bridge School, which opened its doors just a week or two ago, rips apart old conventions of education and tackles the learning process with a fresh eye. Connie Yeh is spearheading this new endeavor and joins today to talk about this unique facility. Now about food ... You are what you eat. Guess what. So is your dog. In this special edition of The Conversation, Herndon will join host Cathy Brooks at the offices of PeopleBrowsr in San Francisco for an intimate and candid conversation about GLAAD, its role in the LGBT community, where social media plays into the mix and - most importantly - what people can do to get involved. One of the nation's largest and most visible LGBT advocacy organizations, GLAAD has played a central role working with news, entertainment and, most recently, social media to ensure fair, balanced, culture-changing stories of the LGBT community to the public. For more than 25 years, GLAAD has been part media watchdog, part educator and native guide, helping those telling the stories and those whose stories need to be shared. As it's the 10th one, no doubt there will be plenty special going on. The speaker list, as usual, is platinum - Tim Cook of Apple, Larry Ellison of Oracle, NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Daniel Ek of Spotify, Reid Hoffman of LinkedIn - among others. Rather than prognosticate too much about what D10 *might* be like, today's episode will focus on a few social etiquette gaffes of the last couple weeks and some tips on how to avoid being a member of the douchoise by behaving that way. The Conversation is not about technology. It's about what you do with it. We probably shouldn't be surprised that Klout is in the news again for their less than savory practice (now allegedly ceased) of automatically creating Klout profiles for people considering that the CEO has shown less than savory behavior since launching his business (admitting to "stalking" Twitter execs for starters). This week a discussion of social web "influence" what that really means (like when people who actually *have* influence rebel) and why we should censure those who create these types of businesses. Joining Cathy for this week's rant ... ahem ... reasoned discourse ... is Tonia Ries, founder of Modern Media, which produces the RealTime Report and the Realtime Conference - she also was included in a New York Times story on Monday, November 14 that spoke about some of the industry leaders who've spoken out against Klout. The Conversation is not about technology. It's about what you do with it. Built into a longer-form performance for 140 Conference Tel Aviv, this beat poem is equal parts rant and clarion call to digital denizens. First - failure. It's something we all experience, yet in most cultures failure is tantamount to a Scarlet Letter. Look no further than Corporate America or pretty much any government body to see examples of people who make mistakes - big ones - yet fail to own up to them or learn. Not so in Silicon Valley. Tech is an industry saturated with failure and it's often from that failure the greatest success comes. Next week marks the third annual FailCON - a conference dedicated to this topic. Conference producer Cassie Phillips joins the show today to talk about it.  Also on this week's show, tech industry rabblerouser Jason Calacanis joins to talk about the newest event on his always evolving roster of activities - and no doubt there will be other saucy industry discussion as well. The ongoing wrestling match of on-line etiquette you would think would have rumbled into a dull roar by now, what with all these platforms becoming such a normal part of most people's everyday lives. Oh, wait. These platforms aren't a normal part of "most" people's everyday lives. In fact, in spite of the burgeoning numbers of people on-line (stats that continue to grow), the truth is that most people still find operating in the digital realm ... well ... odd. Perhaps this explains the perpetual problems with bad behavior, sloppy communication and just downright lousy etiquette. There are, however, many digital denizens who make it part and parcel of their work to help educate and guide others - even if that isn't part of their actual work. On today's show, real estate marketing expert Ricardo Bueno joins Cathy for a wide ranging discussion of online etiquette ... and perhaps a rant or two from Cathy. How many countless times have firestorms begun, sparked by an errant tweet or misconstrued comment. Last week was no exception. Amidst the brou-ha-ha of Michael Arrington's spitting contest with AOL a comment scooted into the Twittersphere from the account of VentureBeat tech writer Jolie O'Dell. "Women, stop making start-ups about fashion, shopping and babies. At least for the next few years. You're embarrassing me." As if the ongoing issues around women in business weren't irritating enough, now a female was deriding women for starting the wrong kind of businesses. At least that's how it appeared. An array of women spoke out. One piece of powerful commentary came from industry beacon, author and (ahem) female entrepreneur with a shopping related start-up, Tara Hunt. This week Tara joins Cathy to discuss this issue and perhaps through a little discourse about online etiquette at the same time. Jolie was invited to join the conversation and declined, stating that her original comment was not intended to be as flippant as it had been construed and needed a few more days before she could publicly comment/publish more fully formed thoughts. Memorial Day has come and gone, which means it's time to start thinking about summer - the end of the school year and the start of fun and frolic. Today's guests tackle two interesting summer-oriented themes. One of the most emblamatic things about ending a school year is the yearbook, but sadly due to costs many schools are reducing or even removing this staple of school life. Not if TreeRing has anything to say about it. CEO and Co-Founder Aaron Greco joins the show along with literacy specialist Petey Berman and an 8th grader, Daysi, to talk about the way this old time school practice is getting a new life. Another thing that marks summertime are concerts - and lots of them. There seem to be many old time bands making a comeback this year along with the usual cadre of fresh artists. While summer may mark a traditional tour season, more and more artists are taking to social media as a means to strengthen and build audience and stay connected when off the road. Red Magnet Media founder Rachel Masters joins this week's show to talk about her business, the artists with whom she works and how social media is changing the music business. With his most recent book now on version 2.0, and Brian himself on a solid version 3.0 of himself, how does he view the need for being nimble and evolutionary in today's business world? When Cathy first met her other guest, he'd just walked away from the glamorous world (that's a slightly sarcastic statement) of being a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press. After spending time in a Knight Foundation program, in which he analyzed the impact of the social web on news gathering, Burt Herman got an idea. A couple of years later, he launched Storify at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. This week Storify moved from private beta into public access and has caused quite a stir. What do these things have in common? Rhetoric - whether marketing speak or political vitriol words play a crucial role ... and with technology those words carry even more power. On today's episode, Cathy is joined by Edelman Digital's Michael Brito to talk about this trend and what we can do about it. For our last fresh episode of the year, Cathy will be tackling a topic that has arisen on the show several times, and this time we'll be taking a slightly different tack. The topic - women and the experiences (not always good) in rising through business and especially in the technology realm. For the record, this is NOT another rant or "woe are we, why oh why do women face discrimination" discussion. Instead today we're going to take some nasty parts head on (like sexism) and talk about ways to combat it. We're going to talk about what we can do to foster more support and encourage young women to step forward. We're going to look at some statistics and see if we can make some sense of it. Unless you're filmmakers Marina Rice Bader & Nicole Conn, who have embarked upon a crowdsourcing effort for their next project, "Perfect Ending". On this episode, the filmmakers will join to talk about this endeavor, how things are going and what their plans are. Also on today's program, founder of Hollaback.org, Emily May, talks about different efforts to raise money on-line - one of which was very successful and the other of which is facing some challenges. Integrity. Loyalty. These three words all lead up to the big one that's gotten quite a bit of attention in the on-line realm in the last week - Influence. Two separate and unrelated Influencer Projects are the focus of this week's Social Media Hour. First up, what was billed as the "shortest marketing conference ever", The Influencer Project took 60 people, asked them each for a one-minute interview giving advice to entrepreneurs, and then ran a 60-minute, on-line broadcast of all the responses. Focusing on telling entrepreneurs what they can do to increase their influence over a 60 day period, the speakers ranging from Guy Kawasaki and Brian Solis to Erica O'Grady and many others (Disclosure: SMH Host Cathy Brooks was one of the 60 people) proffered thoughts on myriad aspects of entrepreneurial influence. The next day, a completely different Influencer Project hit the Interweb with a completely different response. Produced by Fast Company, this Influencer Project, which culiminates in coverage in the magazine's November issue, hit some social media snags. Quite a few people, (including Cathy Brooks) perceiving the project as "link-bait" voiced violent disapproval starting a melee across Twitter, blogs and Facebook. Fast Company Editor Mark Borden, who's leading this project, will join Social Media Hour along with several bloggers who voiced their opinions, for a deep discussion on influence and what they've learned so far. 01:00:00TheConversationnostorytelling,social media, cathy brooks, other than that, story navigationReputation. With the amount of transparency in today's world, are people reevaluating what they share? Is that a good thing? You can find site and networks for just about anything ... that's not new. But think about it, you choose to visit a site and participate in a social network ... that behavior is tracked - whether by Google or brands that may appear there. If you choose to post links or comment on posts, others see your participation - so suddenly your personal affinity for a particular group is now public, which means in the case of LGBT oriented content, you are now more out than you were before. There has been much talk, and indeed much action, amidst the digital denizens when it comes to charitable exercises. Twestival - an event orchestrated wholly online using Twitter - has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, both for global efforts and local efforts. This, however, goes beyond that. As leaders and top participants in all of these social media platforms and technologies, there still exists a problem -- we are not the majority. In spite of increasing numbers, the majority of people on this planet still do not use social media to the extent that some do - and that's just talking about regular use. When it comes to doing social good, and by that I'm talking about more than just raising money for charity, there needs to be a distinct effort by those deeply steeped in the stuff, acting as responsible stewards of that which we promote, and find ways to engage and mobilize a better society. On this week's show, Cathy will be joined by JR Johnson, CEO of Lunch 2.0; Myles Weissleder of SF NewTech and Chris Heuer of Ad Hocnium to talk about one effort in which they are engaged to do just this.
