Thank you for focusing on Domestic Violence! Many people don't realize that this issue touches the rich as well as the poor, the educated and uneducated, and surprisingly men as well. I think women especially live in a state of denial when they encounter it and many times just brush it off until it becomes too late or the emotional damage can never be repaired. I advise all people to LOVE themselves enough to "move on" the minute they "smell" emotional, physical or psychological mistreatment.

Boundaries Show Archive/Domestic Violence Awareness Month

    Loyal Listeners,

It appears as if the Boundaries show from last Thursday did not record.  I'm unsure as to the reason, but I've requested assistance so I'll let you know the result.  In the meantime, I'll do a short recap at the beginning of next weeks show and follow up with the scheduled topic, Assertive Communication.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  As a former facilitator of Batterer's Treatment Programs and current facilitator of Anger Management programs, I am an advocate for safe and violence-free families.

Each show in October will focus on different aspects of family/domestic violence to address issues and concerns dedicated for safe families across the United States and the world.  Interviews are pending with individuals who are willing to speak on the topic with authority, experience, and clarity.  Believe me, you'll not want to miss the upcoming shows!  I encourage you to tell a friend and then two more!

    Here are some statistics:

    • Estimates range from 960,000 incidents of violence against a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend per year1 to three million women who are physically abused by their husband or boyfriend per year.2
    • Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime.3
    • Nearly one-third of American women (31 percent) report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives, according to a 1998 Commonwealth Fund survey.4
    • Nearly 25 percent of American women report being raped and/or physically assaulted by a current or former spouse, cohabiting partner, or date at some time in their lifetime, according to the National Violence Against Women Survey

According to SafeState.org -California Attorney General's Crime and Violence Prevention Center, the following statistics are for Calls for Service for Domestic Violence related assistance: (I selected 3 cities at random)

Calls for Domestic Violence Related Assistance
      2005
    Calls
    County            % of
    State Total
    Los Angeles 45,684 25.2%
    Sacramento 5,830 3.2%
    Santa Cruz 1,077 0.6%
    Statewide 181,362

    Source: Department of Justice

One call for service is one call too many and a clear cry for help!  Join me in supporting victims and families.  Listen and lead others to do the same!
