Everybody knows that folks are more sentimental around this time of year. Folks break their necks to buy big ticket items starting Black Friday and the spending doesn't stop til the weekend after Christmas.. There's nothing wrong with that and besides the season being about a Christian holiday to celebrate the acknowledgment of the birth of Jesus, what about the fact that folks are mainly NICE around this time of year? is it because they are hoping for something special from Santa for being nice? What's your gift? What are you meant to do?The Buzz...What were you born to do? I spoke w/author Bernice L. McFadden earlier this month & she said she believes she was born to write & write she does. I believe I'm inches from discovering my calling. Why inches? Bcuz it's better than being miles or light years away. I worked in the business world so long that one day I began to feel sick 2 my stomach at my work. It involved telling someone how rich they were for something as basic as TV. I know it's business but it felt like benefiting from someone's bad habit like a pusher & I felt like I couldn't do it anymore. Somewhere along the way to that realization I thought about moving to non-profit because I care about folks but I now see that it's quite possibly the same kind of racket I escaped. So the best way for me to reach folks is on an individual level etc. I mean come on now, I'm not going 2 move 2 the mountains & live out my days feeding a forgotten tribe but I want 2 do something & don't know what. The Sting...People goin round talkin about spirituality as the key, knowledge as key, who you know (I say who knows you) is the key, or pure luck is the key to finding your path, your life's work. I'm still waiting for Publisher's Clearing House to come with my check so I can make up my path as I go along but that doesn't seem to be happening so. The Healing...Mama I was born to sing! or maybe dance, act, tell jokes, enlighten others, lead, speak, do magic. what were you born to do & are you doing it and if not, why not? There are no contracts up for grabs here but you never know who's listening. What's stopping you from following your destiny or spiritual path? Are you in your own way? Does it just come to you one day? Does a light bulb or other illuminating figure just poof on? Is it okay to be spiritual all of a sudden or were u following ur path all along? R people more apt to find their spiritual path after a disappointment like a lay off etc? At first I was shocked but then I was wrong..The Buzz...When I came up with Epis.20 (8/22), I Can't Believe It, No, Say It Ain't So...I approached it from news & other life events that caused us to be shocked, dismayed, betrayed, hoodwinked, bamboozled, led-astray etc. you get the point. But what about those events where we formed an opinion of shock & disgust & we were ill informed (misinformed? lied to?) & left to eat crow or whatever else you have an aversion to eating? These experiences can be on a personal level or on a social level. We have reporters who are so desperate 2 make a name for themselves that they tape public figures at their not so best moment, in some cases. Perfect example is long time White House reporter Helen Thomas who gave her heart felt opinion on what's going on in Gaza (U know, "the occupation") & what about the USDA head who was forced to resign when a snippet of a speech was broadcast on the internet. turns out she was talking about a time in her life where she questioned her own character & decided to overcome some of those feelings she had towards whites. The NAACP later apologized for racing to judgment & pounding her into the ground as well as some of the media outlets but that didn't stop some from digging up video of her husband making pointed remarks about issues in America. The Sting...I had my mouth all fixed up for that orange Juice & you left a corner in the carton..then I end up shooting someone's pinky toe off but I nothing happens to me because everything I just said wasn't true - it's from Harlem Nights wEddie Murphy & Mz Della Reese. Does the media have responsibility 2 report the facts WHEN they R available or is it up to you to seek out the truth? Where do people get off on doing this? & why do people get off on doing this? In the 80s it was a college degree that landed that job for you, in the 90s you have to admit it was the tech age and it was more about what you knew in the practical sense if you were in IT and a bit of who-you-knew. As the industry boomed bringing along with it many opportunities for contracts and jobs that bragged about bringing in the information age (I thought Paul Revere did that) and upgrading or implementing the latest and greatest, so did the need to have a college degree. Don't get me started on the 2000s.. I really want to forget they ever happened. The Sting.. This show isn't about having a degree or not but more about if we were fooled to think that knowledge via the paper is greater than practical experience? What was important all along? Are we not as smart now as we were then and what is the contributing factor? Learning as you go was always the norm back in the day as every job provided training AND they paid you for it. What changed? Does the work force believe less in the work people (we were all trainable then so)? Does the paper the degree is printed on only hold water if it's a part of a magician's illusion? One of the most common beliefs are that Americans do not want to learn about other cultures because we are too wrapped up in our own society. A cousin down South oft times is unable to communicate with a cousin up North because we use different social words based on region.. I can't fix that but I can start with bridging the gap in our own community. I'm not speaking of slang and I'm not talking about old folks and young folks, I'm talking about peers who may be of a different culture who live next door or attend the same school/class we do. The Sting...I'm going to throw out a few words and ask what it means to you.. An example is that a person farting under the cover only means that someone farted under the cover to a black person but to a white person, it is referred to as a Dutch oven. See where I'm going with this? A major reason for this show is to gain a better understanding of each others language use, break the ice because this is a show with a multicultural audience, and because it will be a guaranteed good time. And just as important, for years psychological achievement tests have stated that minority children score poorly in the verbal reasoning tests than their white counter parts. I'm not seeking to prove them wrong (I can't because we're all adults) but to show that there can be other factors that affect a child's performance. The Healing Process..
