Mayor Marsh and the Council took the money late in the June 23 meeting on consent item number 27.
The Bee has left the story under the radar for almost 2 weeks.
Former Mayor Carmen Sabatino separated the Modesto Chamber of Commerce from the CVB when it was discovered taxpayer funds were being comingled.
The CVB was created as an independent body with board members being selected by the city Council.
On June 23rd, that independent body was terminated and Mayor Marsh and the Council will look for a new group who will run it under their control.
Everybody wants the money, maybe the Modesto Chamber of Commerce can get it back.
FROM THE BEE:
"The City Council on June 23 approved a proposal that reassigns the CVB’s functions and its $249,071 budget to the city’s Community and Economic Development Department over the next year while the city develops a new model to promote Modesto. The proposal reclassifies the CVB’s staff – consisting of longtime Executive Director Jennifer Mullen and executive assistant Dana Hohn – as city employees for one year.
I had no idea this was coming,” CVB board Chairman Neal Khatri said in an interview. He added that city officials told him and the other CVB board members about their decision the week before the council meeting. Interim Deputy City Manager Brent Sinclair said the city notified the CVB in early April that the contract was expiring."
