On October 26th, Sean M. Decatur will make history when he is inaugurated as the 19th president of Kenyon College. He will also distinguish himself from all other past leaders of the College as our first black president.
He takes the helm armed with a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Stanford University, familiarity with small, elite liberal arts schools as a graduate of Swarthmore College, and years of proven academic leadership and excellence at Oberlin and Mt. Holyoke Colleges.
President Decatur has penned insightful pieces on matters critical to the foundations of American higher education including the importance of the marriage between science and liberal arts education, online education, student evaluations, and college rankings. AYG chats with him about growing up in Cleveland, the career path that led him to his historic appointment, his hopes for her alma mater, his family and the one thing he wishes to see in this lifetime.
