    The American Reality (revised)

My family and I went up the coast of Georgia and rented a room in a bed & breakfast.  The town we resided was rich in history along with every other area within minutes.  St. Simon's Island was across the bridge and just behind the trees was the dock for Sapelo Island's ferry.  The area was thought conducive to say the least.  Every antenna that belonged to my Geechee descendent self was acute.  The area is inhabited by those certainly of relation.  Although we had never visited prior, I knew this land was relative to my existence.

The bed & breakfast was of some mentioning.  There are 5 rooms total.  At some point they were all occupied through-out our stay.  I would even say that the interaction of occupants is more intimate than any other vacationing accommodations due to sharing common areas.  Needless to say, it is Independence Day and American flags are being raised and saluted.  The patriotism of every red, white, and blue American is sailing at full staff.

For the first time, history began to take a revelatory turn on this trip.  Not only did we "salute" the flag on this trip, we also got the overly exuberant treat of connecting to all that was in the path of encounter.  Leaving the flag, we journeyed across the water and spent time on Sapelo Island.  There was even time to bolt down some beliefs...the momentum of the instance turned from past history to the happenings of the current lacking the time that deems a historical moment.

The towns about the coast of any area bare witness of African-American reality.  There is no way to separate the fact of slavery from any cargo areas of the coast whereby the ships were first loaded with Africans traveling the Atlantic.  Being from Charleston, SC leaves me no naiveté for the fact of the American slave story perpetuated on the ebony people.  Any naiveté from childhood was validated by the dominant culture encountered.  (In all honesty, I enjoyed the encounter in a way only intended for the one in my shoes).

The dominant culture encountered, (inn guests also), invited me into conversation only to ask what I thought of the caste system known to India.  For anyone in my shoes, Independence celebratory time in North America is not the best time for loaded moral questions.  Especially when the response is given, WWIII comes about.  I was not appreciated and told that less was thought of me due to my beliefs.

All I said was the caste system ran in the same vein as aristocracy and American slavery.  (They began to play musical chairs and shift before my eyes.  The two men of dominant culture literally changed seats at their disdain of my comments.)  I was prepared to defend my position.  At that point....(please check back for the rest of the story.)
