Will it be Busch's night to jump in the standings or at least make some ground on the front-runners?

I say yes, but not the younger Busch.  Kurt Busch is the one to watch in this race.  He has six top-ten finishes in his last ten races and would certainly like to collect more points and better his sixth-place position.  Last spring Busch took the checkered flag at the Atlanta Speedway to win the Kobalt Tools 500.  He needs just four points to secure a spot in the Chase but isn't interested in just claiming a spot.  He seems to really enjoy racing in Georgia and has progressively improved here each time he sees the green flag waving.  In the past two years he managed to go from 19th on the start grid to finish in sixth spot and turned a second place start into a victory.

This Saturday brings the return of heavy action as the rest of the college football season kicks off. With all the heavy hitters in action the pressure to pick up that first win of the season is always tough. No where is there more pressure on opening day than in South Bend where lately the expectations seem to exceed the Irish's on field results. With Charlies Wies looking to lead the program back to national prominence (or at least a winning season) and NBC looking for a spike in ratings the Irish start the season ranked (#23) for the first time in three years. However, they will be in tough against a Nevada Wolf Pack who garnered some preseason votes and recognition as well. Although Notre Dame should win the game having to overcome 14.5 points will prove to be too many for the Irish to cover against the 'Pistol' attack of Hall of Fame coach Chris Ault and his Nevada Wolf Pack. The Pack will have 3 different 1000 yard rushers in the backfield (probably sometimes all at once), led by 2008 WAC player of the year QB Colin Kaepernick and tail backs Vai Tuna (the 2008 WAC rushing leader) and Luke Lippincutt (the 2007 WAC rushing champ). This triple option rushing threat will find more holes in the Irish defense than the World Golf Academy as the Irish will not be able to contain all three of them for 4 quarters.   Although the Irish and Jimmy Claussen should be able to pick apart Nevada's secondary, the pressure to win could prove the toughest thing for the Irish to overcome. I see a close game with the smart money taking Nevada +14.5 and the real action seekers taking Nevada to win outright @ +475.

Another team with high expectations this year are the Golden Bears of California. Although not as high as the shadow of Touch Down Jesus, Cal starts the season ranked #12 with hopes of returning to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 51 years. Cal kicks off the season at home against a Maryland team that lost 30 seniors from last year along with Jr. wideout and first round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey.

This is a statement game for Cal and a statement is what they are going to make. If Cal hopes to contend for the national championship and return to the Rose Bowl they need to pick apart this ACC rival and avenge last year's 35-27 loss. Heisman hopeful Jahvid Best will lead the Golden Bears attack as he will add to the 225 all purpose yards he put up against the Terps last year. Look for Best to improve dramatically on the only 25 yards he was able to muster along the ground. Led by Jr. quarterback Kevin Riley (a dark horse Heisman hopeful himself) the Bears aerial attack should pick apart the Terps secondary as Riley looks to duplicate the 400 yards he threw for last year on the road.

When the smoke clears in and around Memorial Stadium in Berkeley on Saturday night, the Bears will cover the 21 points on there way to dismantling an inexperienced Terrapins squad that will see the game go over the 51.5 total
