Cheek  "Probably no one person has done more to make behavioral counseling and therapy multiculturally relevant than Donald Cheek whose pioneering book Assertive Black...Puzzled White - A Black Perspective on Assertive Behavior shows how to use assertivness training in a culturally relevant way with African Americans. Indeed it could be argued that Dr. Cheek is the first cognitive-behavioral theorist"  Dr. Donald Cheek went from a Harlem ghetto childhood to the academic world of a university professor. In addition to his "street" credentials Dr. Cheek studied at Fordham School of Social Sciences, NY, where he received his M.S.W. and Temple University in Philadelphia where he received a Doctorate Degree in Social Psychology. Among his many positions, he served as Counselor and Professor of Social Psychology, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; Vice-President of the Human Resources Institute and Lecturer in Social Psychology, Claremont Colleges and The Principal Trainer and Consultant for the United States Governors Conference on Race Relations in America. His many awards and grants include being a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Fellow and received a W. K. Kellogg Foundation Grant to provide academic exposure and vocational guidance to under-represented students. Dr. Cheek recently retired as Professor of Education, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, after 22 years of service. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Social Psychology at Fresno State University in Fresno, California. Cheek is also National Board Director Emeritus for Prison Fellowship USA founded by Chuck Colson and performs duties as an Elder at Saints Community Church. 00:46:00The Peoples StudionoKelvin De'Marcus Allen, beulah project,Dr. Donald K. They believe all to often, schools rely on law enforcement, rather than teachers and administrators, to handle minor school misconduct. The pair, both in their final year of law school, have decided to produce a documentary on the subject of what many now refer to as the "School to Prison" pipeline. The "School to Prison" pipeline is a disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect, and would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished and pushed out. "Zero-tolerance" policies criminalize minor infractions of school rules, while high-stakes testing programs encourage educators to push out low-performing students to improve their schools' overall test scores. Students of color are especially vulnerable to push-out trends and the discriminatory application of discipline. Tune in to the People's Studio to find out why Bullock and Byrd believe the "School to Prison" pipeline is one of the most important civil rights challenges facing our nation, and  why they believe their documentary will make a difference. 00:46:00The Peoples StudionoKelvin DeMarcus Allen, school to prison pipeline,African American youth, zero tolerance policies,Brandi Bullock and Joshua ByrdLaw students, Brandi Bullock and Joshua Byrd want to do something to curtail the high incidence of students of color entering the criminal justice system. Still, despite having to endure numerous medical procedures, the deaths of both his father and brother, and assisting with the care of his ailing mother, Harrell seems almost nonchalant about his latest challenge, finding a heart. In 1993, Ivan was diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia and high blood pressure. Doctors implanted a defibrillator that puts his heart back into sinus rhythm. Ivan has since been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and a blood clot. He also has 50% blockage of his main artery. Doctors say a heart transplant is critical to his survival. On Sunday September 30, the Durham community and friends are invited to attend The 2nd Annual Organ Donor/Transplant Surgery Awareness Day at Union Baptist Church located at 904 N. Roxboro Street.  The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will feature the musical stylings of the 100 Men In Black Choir, donor and recipient testimonials, speakers and more. Collaborating agencies include the National Foundation for Transplants, UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital, Carolina Donor Services and Union Baptist Church.         00:30:00The Peoples StudionoIvan K Harrell,Heart Transpalnt,Transplant Awareness Day,Kelvin DeMarcus Allen,Blacks and Organ DonationIvan Harrell doesn’t strike you as the sort of ‘fella’ who needs anything from anyone.  In fact, the tall spectacled former high school tennis champ exudes so m
