Juan Gomez (pictured) will be graduating magna cum laude from Georgetown University next month. He has been handed an outstanding offer of employment from an high profile bank on Wall Street. The United States of America is the only home Juan has known for the past 20 years. But will this be enough to prevent deportation for him come next year? That's the question that plaques the mind of Juan Gomez and countless other immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for years and decades, having migrated from their homelands (as children) only to live the "dream" of an American citizen. Immigration is and has always been a sensitive subject here in the states, but should children immigrants who were ushered into our country under their parents guidance be punished and exiled back to a country that's as foreign to them as it is to any other American?? The Dream Act is a legislation that, if passed, will offer permanent residency to students like Juan and other immigrants who go on to pursue higher education or military service. The Dream Act has been presented to the Senate numerous times, but has yet to garner the amount of voted needed to pass. When I read Juan's story, I couldn't believe this was happening in our country and I was compelled to reach out to him. How would you feel? Who would you tell? How would you feel if you found out your best friend was HIV positive? Would you shun them or embrace them? Why??? All great questions and I think we should be asking them all. I wanted to create a show around this subject because I recently had to ask myself some of these same questions. I had an HIV test performed just a few weeks ago. I tested negative, but the entire emotional experience was so profound and life changing, I felt strongly that I needed to share it. This was certainly a personal experience, but I feel it's a lesson that everyone can learn from. I could literally feel the stigma and shame fall upon me had I tested positive. From promiscuity to unsafe sex; I had been there and done that. I have nothing to hide because, after all the dust settled, I believe I came out of this a changed person. Whether for better or worse is still to be determined, but maybe my story will spark the change in you that you've been looking for. How do YOU feel about this subject?
