Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome used to be considered just an illness affecting veterans of war, but shocking violence erupting at schools, shopping malls, and churches have affected many American children and adults. Some schools offer grief counseling to children who have witnessed violence, but many neighborhoods are left to fend for themselves. Often, those in high crime areas whose lives have been most shattered by violence are expected to just "get over it.". How can faith communities help in the process of healing for families shattered by the trauma of violence? Various religious leaders comment on their methods of addressing the pain of violence.
