Barack Hussein Obama's Latest Orwellian Performance (and a Covert Bailout to Boot!)

Remember when the unhinged sufferers of Bush Derangement Syndrome used to angrily accuse President Bush of “using a crisis” as a lever to force through his evil ideological agenda? That agenda happened to include preventing another murderous attack on America, but that was beside the point. They described the president and Vice President Cheney nefariously scheming to take us into a war of choice, a decision based completely on his irrational ideology, and not on what is good for the nation. These conspiratorial conversations, of course, were figments of the fevered brains on these wackjobs. Ah, the good old days. We no longer have to imagine a president using a crisis to ram through his political agenda. Our current president boldly looks down his nose, a posture he apparently assumes to facilitate reading his ever-present TelePrompter, and proclaims that he plans to use the economic crisis to do “things,” specifically an unprecedented federal takeover of education, health care and probably what side you part your hair before he’s through. Such candor is refreshing, albeit chilling.  Some of the great thinkers on the talking head shows, noticing the fact that after being office over 7 weeks, the man-god president has failed to address the banking crisis at the bottom of our current economic difficulties, have begun scratching their heads and asking “why?” Let me speak slowly so that these geniuses can follow along. Doesn’t it follow that if the economic “crisis” will be the battering ram that the Obamnumist use to  push their socialist agenda down our collective throats and pocketbooks, they can’t fix it just yet, can they? Wouldn’t that be letting the crisis go to “waste?” The challenge that Obama’s two puppet masters, Rahm “the Human Q-Tip” Emanuel and David “Mayor Daley’s Mouthpiece” Axelrod have is to ensure a brisk and obvious economic recovery in time for the 2010 elections. Hence the “fierce urgency of now,” the need to get the socialism in firmly place in time to stop talking down the economy and otherwise deliberately making it worse before mid-2010. $0$0$0$0Meanwhile, yesterday, our first affirmative action president Barack Hussein Obama held another clinic in Orwellian double speak, which just happened to include a disguised bailout. If you missed the bailout, you can be forgiven. It was all dressed up in a bunch of emotionally-driven drivel about Christopher Reeve and passive-aggressive slaps at former President Bush. More on that in a moment, but first let’s consider what the president said:$0$0$0 “But let's be clear: Promoting science isn't just about providing resources -- it's also about protecting free and open inquiry. It's about letting scientists like those who are here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it's inconvenient -- especially when it's inconvenient. It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda -- and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology.$0$0$0$0 There we have another perfectly reasonable statement with which no reasonable person could disagree, and one which is completely at war with the president’s actions. A belief in pure scientific inquiry would militate against embracing the ideologically-driven belief in man-made global warming. It would also dictate that we invest our tax dollars in research on treatments that have proven successful, and therefore, might result in cures sometime in the foreseeable future. Listening to the sloppy reporting of the Obama flaks in the mainstream media, it would be easy to assume that there has been a “ban on stem cell research,” when what there has been is a ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. What Obama did with the stroke of his mighty pen was lift the funding ban on the type of stem cell research that has produced ZERO cures, as opposed to the more promising adult stem cell research, which so far has produced 72 cures, or the potentially amazing IPS (induced pluripotent stem) cells, an area pioneered by Dr. James Thompson, the scientist who first isolated embryonic stem cells.$0$0$0$0$0On the theory that we shouldn’t throw federal funds down various ratholes, a rare belief in Washington, Congressman Randy Forbes (R-Virginia) has introduced the Patients First Act. To quote from the Congressman’s website:$0$0$0$0$0 Specifically, the Patients First Act would$0$0$0$0$0 Promote the creation of pluripotent stem cell lines without the creation, destruction and discarding of, or risk of injury to human embryos;$0$0 Intensify stem cell research that may result in an improved understanding of, or treatment for, diseases and other adverse health conditions$0$0 Promote research and human clinical trials using stem cells that are ethically obtained and show evidence of providing clinical benefit for human patients; and, $0$0 Direct the National Institutes of Health to prioritize stem cell research that has the greatest potential for near-term clinical benefits, by directing both basic and clinical research towards what is currently showing benefits in treating patients now.$0$0$0$0$0 The bill is bipartisan. It is co-sponsored by Dan Lipinski (D-IL). I guess I can paraphrase the First Klingon and say that for the first time I’m proud of my congressman.$0$0$0$0$0Now, about that bailout. Since it’s far from clear that patients will be the main beneficiaries of the opening of the federal money spigot for ESC research, who does benefit? Could it be the companies who have invested heavily in this unproven and apparently inferior technology? One example could be Geron Corp. On March 5, before the lifting of the ban, their stock closed at $3.87. Yesterday, it closed at $4.51, an increase of ~16%. Not bad in a down market, which raises a couple of questions: (1) has anyone investigated campaign contributions from the companies who are invested in ESC to the democrats in general and the man-god Barry in particular? and (2) when Barry was telling people to buy stock about a week ago, why didn’t he give us a really decent tip and tell us to buy Geron?$0$0$0$0
