AARP is known to provide discounts to is members, provide branded insurance products, and lobby on behalf of Social Security and Medicare. Recently, this same non-profit has released two mobile apps - targeting the Caregiver community. A caregiver is a term for anyone who helps or provides care to another individual, often a parent or spouse, in handling their daily activities. The caregiver can be paid, such as a nurse, but is more often an unpaid relative. And the person receiving care is often suffering an impairment, and/or dealing with health issues. These two apps released by AARP (for iOS and Android) provide features designed to help in providing care. For instance, the apps help manage medications, keep a schedule of doctor's appointments and other medical needs, and create and maintain notes you want to share with the doctor. But will this work? Does this actually help someone take care of a loved one? Are these features unique? Are they really the features that a Caregiver needs? On May 28th, at a special 11am EST/8am Pacific time, we will be joined by Trisha San Diego of AARP, who is the driving force behind the creation and release of these Apps, and we'll ask her these questions. We'll talk about these apps and ask if there is a sign of things to come from AARP?   Tune in Live at 11am EST, Thursday, May 28th! The lower costs and better outcomes anyway? The relative high cost and poor outcomes of the US healthcare system as compared to the rest of the developed world is well documented.  In his first Inaugural Address, President Obama promised to “wield technology’s wonders” to improve the quality and lower the cost of medical care in America.  This hasn’t happened.  The benefits IT has brought to most every industry, hasn’t been witnessed in the medical industry. This may be because best practices for developing IT solutions simply don't take into consideration what needs to go into building successful medical products and treatment approaches. I’ve seen this gap – and the consequences it can cause – while building and deploying hardware-based tools and software applications, including EMR and ERP systems, for a variety of industries.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 4th at 6pm EST, we discuss what needs to be done to bridge the gap between IT product development and the medical community’s need for evidence-based research and clinical trials.  We’ll also discuss a project I’m working on in researching Personal Health Records, or PHR systems, as an effort to tailor IT product development best practices to meet healthcare’s intrinsic needs from new products and treatments.  If successful, the approach may change how Health IT solution are develop throughout the industry.  Join Us tomorrow @ 6pm EST right here! & Join the conversation on twitter @techtodayradio, our blog, or FB. Listeners are also invited to call us Live on Air @ 646-652-4385.  00:30:00Ajay GuptanoClinical Research,Clinical Trials,Health IT,IT Product Development,Medical TechnologyThe relative high cost and poor outcomes of the US healthcare system as compared to the rest of the developed world is well documented.  In his first InauguralMilitary-Themed Video Games - Good for Tech, Bad for Society??http://www.blogtalkradio.com/technologytoday/2014/02/18/military-themed-video-games--good-for-tech-bad-for-societyTechnologyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/technologytoday/2014/02/18/military-themed-video-games--good-for-tech-bad-for-society/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/technologytoday/2014/02/18/military-themed-video-games--good-for-tech-bad-for-societyTue, 18 Feb 2014 23:00:00 GMTMilitary-Themed Video Games - Good for Tech, Bad for Society??Ever wonder where these military-themed video games come from? How are game programmers and software designers able to make war scenarios and military equipment so life-like? Much has been made about potential adverse physiological impacts of both violent video games, especially at a young age.  To be sure, video games have had a tremendous positive impact on real-time data processing, sound & video graphics as well as in other consumer technology areas. As always, these benefits must be balanced against their social considerations.  That's what this episode is all about. Do you have a position on whether video game violence contributes to violence in real live, such as gun shootings, domestic abuse and violent crimes?  Video game makers take their share of heat on this front, but military themed games remain among the most popular video games franchises. We’ll talk about the true source of this violence – and it’s one that may surprise you. We'll be joined by Gamer and Friend of the Show, Lee Gaddies.   Tune in & Share your thoughts on this topic. Well, those who hold this opinion may be surprised to know that video games and gaming in general are drivers of great technological advancement in a variety of fields - from the computer graphics that display games, to artificial intelligence that run games & play as the "computer", to personal computing computational power that handles advanced graphics & AI on ever smaller form factors from desktops to laptops to tables and even to phones. There are even more subtle advances that most people don’t think about such as human-user interaction. We’ve come a long way from a keyboard & mouse. Video games and the consoles on which they are played are big business. Popular video games commonly sell over a million copies. Recently, both Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One have been released, in time for the Christmas holiday buying season and with brisk sales forecasts.  The Tech behind Gaming is a topic we need to discuss. And we’ll do that on Tuesday, December 3rd at 6pm EST. One feature that hasn't recevied as much discussion as may be deserved is the fingerprint biometric feature.  That's the kind of tech we like to discuss at Technology Today and we'll tdo that this Wednesday at 6pm EST. Security is an ever growing concern and the 4-digit passcode is often more of an annoyance than a detterent. Our approach is simple - we gain an understanding of the provider's operations in critical areas (access control, data backups, security monitoring, incident response, etc.) and compare them to our own. We compare them based on the risk those operations bring to - or reduce from - the organization. We'll discuss the details on air, but our approach increases an organization's understanding of how their data is managed internally and in the Cloud.  With this knowledge, management can make a far more informed and sound business decision with respect to Going to the Cloud vs keeping the data and applications internally. But, while technology has had a huge effect on everyday life, nothing is perfect. This week, we talk about a situation where technology, unintentionally, has led to some negative consequences. For example, advances in medical science and technology not allow young people with formerly fatal health conditions to live well into adulthodd, allowing families who have children with such conditions to enjoy a relatively normal family life. We constantly encourage doctors and the medical industry to make new discoveries and breakthroughs. However, these life extending treatment options can not only be costly but take year away from a normal childhood - by keeping the child out of school and off of the playground sometimes for years. And also be keeping a parent home to care for and comfort the child - meaning a loss of income and sometimes creating such a stressful environment that can break apart the family unit. And even after enduring years of life extending medical procedures, protocols and medicines as a child, these same children get lost as young adults. The same services, resources and care that helped them survive their childhood become more and more difficult to come by to attain "quality of life" care that allows them to return to school, go to work and resume a normal, health life. This week, we talk with Dr. Santi Bhagat, founder of Physicial-Parent Caregivers (PPC), an advocate working to provide the necessary treatment and support systems so that this population can grow into truly healthy adults able to function socially and contribute economically to society. For anyone who has a chronically ill child, or knows of a family facing these circumstances - this is an important episode that you will want to catch. Since then, listeners have told us that hacking may be performed by agents of a state or government without actually being sponsored by the government. Apparently, it can be easy to abuse the aura of official office to cover an employee's own, personal activities. When a government or an indivdiual within a government misuses their resources to cause harm, what can the victims do? One wonders if there might be some way to call on Anonymous for help? They certainly have the forensic expertise to determine if the accidental deletion of a year's worth of blogs, or an untiemly system crash leading to the loss of entire web sites really was an accident of somthing more sinister. And they can certainly both protect and respond to cyber actions against an online operation. Could Anonymous be a hacker A-Team? Would they want to?  We'll take your comments and calls on this topic Live On Air this Thursday, August 25th at 4pm EST.  Join Us! 00:31:00Ajay GuptanoCybersecurity,Technology,Hacking,Anonymous,state-sponsored hackingRecently, we did a show discussing hacking groups, such as Anonymous and LulzSec, and touched on the notion of state-sponsored hacking. This week, industry veteran Steve Thomas, Preisdent of the Firebird Agency, joins us to discuss how non-profits and associations can do to ensure they are able to take advantage of their technology and the pitfalls to avoid. A key to storing backups electronically and off-site is strong encryption.  We'll discuss how encrypted communications works, the costs involved and what's required of end users in order to make a secure, electronic data backups a viable option for your enterprise.
