MIke's 2010 MLB Offseason Wish List

Here is my wish list for the 2010 MLB offseason.

Now I'm going to present what I'd like to see the defending National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies accomplish as well as my general thoughts in the now underway free agent market.

    2010 Phillies needs:

Third base, Bench, Bullpen, and a starter.

After watching the Phils fall to the Yankees, 4-2 in the Fall Classic its easy to see that the Phils need to fill some needs.

With the decline of Pedro Feliz's option it goes without saying they need a new starter at third base.

I would completely redo the entire bench.  The Phils did not get much out of this department during the course of the 2009 season, and even less during the playoffs.  While I am as big of a Matt Stairs fan as your going to find........I think he is just about done.

The bullpen was hurt by injuries during the course of the season, but they also lacked depth. They need to address this.

The rotation could use a spark as well. Cole Hamels was a big disapointment in 2009. Pedro Martinez gave you everying you could hope for but should not have been relied upon as a game 2 starter in the World Series.

Players I'd like to see the Phillies target in the 2010 Free Agent class:

Chone Figgins (3B).......Can play everywhere, hits for average and has speed. Won't happen due to financial reason but I'd love the upgrade.....

Adrian Beltre (3B)........I'd take a shot on this talent.  He has never lived up to his rookie hype with the exclusion of one contract year. But he is an upgrade in the lineup and at the hot corner over Pedro Feliz.

I'm guessing the Phillies end up with Mark DeRosa which I question.  I don't expect a lot out of him. He is 34/35.....is not great at third base and does not hit for all that much more of an average then Pedro Feliz......I could see Placido Polanco as another possibility. Good defense and more base hits, not much power.

Juan Uribe (Bench)....Can play a few infield positions and hits for power....There are a lot of third base options this offseason and perhaps Uribe is forced to settle for a part time role.

Jose Molina/Gregg Zaun (Bench)....The great Paul Bako is now a free agent. Phillies need someone capable of playing 50 games behind the plate. I'd expect defense to be a priority with offsense a nice benefit.

Rocco Baldelli (Bench)...Phillies have liked him for a while and should come cheap.....

Andruw Jones (Bench).....Phillies had interest last year but they could now offer enough playing time.

Scott Podsednik (Bench)...Defensve and speed could be a priority....could fit the bill.

The rotation as of now looks like Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, J.A. Happs, Joe Blanton and Kendrick/Moyer......The Phillies are going to want to spend money on third base and the pen so I'd like to see the Phils land another low cost / high reward guy like Pedro...

Joel Pineiro (SP)....I'd love to see the Phils make a play but they can't afford the $10 mil a year its going to cost.......

Erik Bedard (SP)....Great talent, real head case.....that and the fact that the Phils are likely more interested in the right hander should prevent this.

Justin Duchscherer (SP)...Possible if he is over his depression.

Rich Harden (SP).....Could be an ace....has Cy Young stuff, but is always injured....I get the feeling more then a couple teams will be willing to take a shot with Harded.

Pedro Martinez (SP)....Seemed to enjoy his time in Philly.  I'm guessing he takes the money from another team......But he could be back if he doesn't get much action.

Ben Sheets (SP) .....Not as good but basically see Rich Harden above..

    The bullpen......

Brad Lidge should be fully healthy in 2010, but the Phils still need to be prepared should he not find himself....

JC Romero will miss a portion of the 2010 season,,,Scott Eyre and Chan Ho Park are both free agents......

Phillies need to add some depth in the pen for 2010.

Some possibilities include........Joe Beimel, Kiko Calero, Alan Embree, LaTroy Hawkins, J.J. Putz, Joe Nelson, Brandon Lyon, and Fernando Rodney

I'd like to see Mike Gonzalez/Rafael Soriano duo move north within the division but they will both get too much money for the Phillies liking.

As for the the rest of the 2010 MLB Offseason

I'd like to see some diversity......I don't want troubled economic times to force teams hands. I don't want to just see the rich get richer.

We don't need every top free agent ending up in Boston or New York.

The World Champion New York Yankees do not need to end up with John Lackey, Matt Holliday among others.......

    About to head West

    Hey all,

It's Matt. I am sorry I couldn't be on today. I was busy moving out of my apartment, which seemed like a bottomless pit of stuff I never knew I had before! I'll be hitting the road on Thursday to head to California. Since I'm posting here on the blog for our show, I'm trying to think of anything sports-related I'll hit on my way out west. There's not a whole lot, but the first night will be Lexington, KY, home to the University of Kentucky and their storied basketball program. They open up their season the night after we'll be there. The second night I'll be in Memphis. The brutal Grizzlies are off, but the U. of Memphis Tigers open their season against Jackson State. Yawn. I think I'll hit up Beale St. instead for some beer, blues and barbecue. Then it's Oklahoma City, home of the Thunder, who are out of town that night. However, our hotel that night overlooks Bricktown Ballpark, which is the stadium where the Texas Rangers AAA affiliate plays their home games. The fourth night I'll be in Albequerque, NM, which is where the University of New Mexico is located. The Lobos basketball team is off that night. But it's a Sunday anyway, so I gotta keep tabs on the football (6-2 in my picks the last 2 weeks by the way!). The 5th day (a Talkin' Sports with Balls Midday Show day) I'll head to Peoria, AZ, home to both the Mariners and Padres Spring Training facilities. Not much happening there, but by then I'll be ready to collapse. Finally, I'll arrive in the LA area on the 17th. Plenty of pro-sports teams there of course, plus some good college athletics. But I've decided to adopt the Clippers as the LA team I'll root for. The Lakers? I'd be a front-runner. The Dodgers? Can't stand Manny. LA Kings? Eh, it's hockey. And football? There is none. So it'll be the Clippers. I figure they are the west coast version of my favorite NBA team, the Knicks, so there is already some symmetry.
I'll try to have some more updates from the road. Talk with you all again soon.
    -Matt
