As a result of her addiction and questionable choices, he and his mom were often left without electricity, new clothes, new eyeglasses and toys, but despite those unpleasant times, Echo's mom was still an encouraging factor in his life. As a matter of fact, his mom was responsible for introducing him to music by purchasing his first keyboard. This small gesture opened up the doors for Echo's imaginative inspiration to unfold which sparked the beginning of his creativity through writing, reading and music, but, unfortunately, because of the perils of his mom's addiction, his keyboard had to be pawned and the cycle of instability continued. After having to repeat 5th grade due to multiple absences in school, Echo was sent to live with his father and new mother in Athens GA. It was in Athens where Echo was able to act as a child without the responsibility of the burden he carried while living with his mother in Perry. His new environment provided him with normalcy, a functional family and the opportunity to dream. Echo has often said that living with his father and new mother saved his life and helped him to transition into a secure, confident man. Even though he had mastered the art of Scripture as a teen, he desired to establish a closer relationship with Christ. His new relationship with God allowed him to find peace, love and freedom in the Gospel. This authentic commitment and strong relationship transitioned into the birth of Echo. It seems the more we resolve the less we actually accomplish. This year I short-circuited my wish list of unwanted pounds, unfinished projects, and pie in the sky considerations for more "reasonable requests" of myself - I resolved to obey God. That takes care of eating just to eat, talking just to talk, and the other acts which reflect a lack of discipline. Don't take it lightly, disobedience is the bedrock of all our dysfunctional behaviors and ill idiosyncrasies that keep us in a place of disappointment when diets fail and pet projects turn into December didn't happens. You see, obedience to God requires submission, and submitting means relinquishing control to someone we cannot see and cannot literally touch, therefore someone we cannot control. The control freak in us facilitates the tailspin of our unresolved resolutions. Instead of progress we find ourselves in the same place year after year, feeling defeated. This year, obedience is my Taskmaster. I am no longer under the law, and I have freedom in Jesus because the son sets us free, to do, to eat, and to go wherever I please under his authority. This is going to be a year of resolution for resolutions. My initial prompting was to “cure” AIDS. I felt I had it in me to do so. I attended Oakwood College as a Biology major, but soon fell prey to many of the things that derail dreams, aspirations, and “high callings.” Eventually (a long eventually) I got back on track, completed my undergraduate degree, moved forward and got that Masters and worked in the healthcare industry for more than 15 years in different areas many that intersected with HIV/AIDS such as direct patient care, and even an STD research study at UAB. The apex of my journey was initiating a non-profit organization called Living Light Ministries & Public health – Health Education mentoring and educating youth and also traveling as a Motivational Messenger, the Talking To Tasha Show on Blogtalk radio included. I got the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Zambia Africa in 2004 to help an international nonprofit initiate an HIV/AIDS program, volunteered in an all-male prison as a Health Educator for 4 years, and initiated and implemented an HIV program in inner city Memphis. Youth all over the south have performed the dramatic plays I have written about HIV/AIDS and I have received commendations and plaques for my service. Tonight on WORDLD AIDS DAY 2010, why do I still feel so empty and lost as it relates to my calling to minister in the area of HIV/AIDS? I used to have a dream, now just sadness. Because AIDS is going to kill more people than we really want to admit, before we all get serious about this disease. For years, King Saul attacked and retreated, listened to David’s music, then attacked again, like a schizophrenic maniac. If you recall, Saul was once the anointed, prophesying man of God. Oh, what a difference a day makes. After the exhilarating deliverance from Goliath, by way of David and a few small stones, Saul went from a happy monarch to a king with an evil spirit – all because the people only credited him (Saul) with slaying thousands, but David they declared has slain ten thousands. Here’s the point for those of you who are trying to get to the kingdom God has promised. After you TKO that big giant, don’t look for kudos in the camp. Even David’s brothers served him Haterade. When he arrived on the scene to play demon slayer, they called him naughty! Fast forward some thousands of years and Barack Obama wins a historical victory, becoming the first president of the United States of America. How difficult his way has been since the inauguration. Why don’t the Democrats play it back and do it like the Republicans did it, when Bush was in office. Bush got his bills passed and his war started. Now Pres. The Republicans won big and regained a majority in the House. The Democrats held the majority in the Senate, and the Tea Party got its foot in the door. I watched President Obama deliver, what initially sounded like a concession speech with undertones of a troubled next two years. The question most asked, “Was the election result a referendum on Obama or his policies?” In other words, are the people sending a personal message, or is this just about the policy decisions Obama has made. As much as I cringed at the sight of some of the signs held up at the Tea Party rallies, I must admit that it was refreshing to see a “Movement of The People” re-surface in America and take Washington to task. When I recall the imagery, of the civil rights movement on film, I wonder when African Americans are going to get off the sidelines and back to the protest politics of the 1960’s where we gained the very privileges we enjoy today. This election was a referendum on the rather quieted voice of Blacks in American politics. The United States of America is as much our country as any other race of people. Every group voiced their expectations, from less government, to immigration reform and gay rights. Every group with a gripe verbalized their discontent in the fray except African Americans – yet we are faring worse in every area, indeed America has a cold, but we have the flu! McClaren Forde's Science of Salvation: Resurrection & Sanctification Applied To Fleshly Lusts The Word of God asks a question, which reads more like a statement with a directive, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above…” The big “if’ implies that some think they have risen but perhaps they have not. Of course if you have risen, you must have died – to self, flesh, and sexual immorality among other things - but given the current state of allegations in the body of Christ…this is a big IF! G. McClaren Forde's Science of Salvation through the discussion of the resurrection and the process of sanctification breathes fresh air on this old subject of the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. I watched Waka Flocka Flame, the rapper in an interview (for the second time) on the Mo'Nique show on BET...if you know what he said, please send me a transcript. Although I followed his lips carefully, (and I am in high def) I barely understood what he was saying! Mo'Nique, further encouraged Mr. Flacka Flame's butchering of English by placating his "realness" as commendable. In the words of Bengals wide receiver number 85, "Chile please!" The new thug fosters poor enunciation, bad grammar, and a deceptive, but sad pretense that his lack of good speaking skills is acceptable (Tupac would roll over in his grave, and re-write Thug Passion if he could). As is our custom on “Minister It To Me Mondays, “ we will cover sermons from the prior weekend. By far, Eddie Long’s sermon was probably the most widely viewed sermon worldwide in recent history, and the media, social networking sites, twitters and twitterettes were in over-drive discussing the sermon/situation. Some were expecting Long to step down as head of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, while others, at least expected an explanation, but most of us knew based on the dance during the week (and legal ramifications) there would be no substantial admission or denial from Long, who is typically emphatic from the pulpit. We have all fallen short of the glory of God and are in need of a weeping session between the porch and the altar, but what are the implications in religion when allegations of this sort rise up in the church? More importantly, what does the WORD of GOD have to say regarding bishopric, confession, homosexuality, vanity (all of which are central to this fiasco) and what does any of this have to do with David and Goliath? Long said on Sunday, "I got five rocks and I haven't thrown one yet." Question: Should people who live in glass houses throw stones at all? Pastor Washington offers his modern, spiritual, perspective from the infallible WORD of GOD. The news media is looping the Eddie Long fiasco ad nauseam so don't get cross with me, everybody else is wagging the tongue about the alleged Bishop Eddie Long scandal, so why shouldn't we give our audience the opportunity to weigh in from a Christian perspective with the modernized, spiritualized response that the Talking To Tasha show is famous for. Afterall, the media has all but crucified the man...his loyal members are standing by his side, hoping the allegations are false (me too). But, if we are hopeful and turn out to be hopefully wrong and the allegations are true, will this be a blow to Christianity and other ministries? I would love to say I've never had a fall, but the truth is I have fallen...more than once, bad, openly, with nowhere to run or hide - while I was in a position of authority and promoting the gospel. I feel his pain - but where do we go from here? Whatever happened to restoring such a one considering ourselves lest we fall? Believe it or not, the same God who restored you and me, still restores. Tonight we will discuss this with humility remembering Eliashib, which means, God restores. 01:01:00Talking To TashanoBishop Eddie Long,Restoration,Trial by Fire in Atlanta,Tasha takes on the Eddie Long media frenzy,New Birth Missionary Baptist ChurchTonight we kick-off season two with a most sensational story and a guest commentator, prolific blogger, writer, and author Eliashib, pen named Reid Kloss. Mrs. Sherrod was preemptively judged by a sound bite of a video where she expressed her inner feelings in terms of helping a white farmer in lieu of the racism experienced by blacks, but concluded with a set of core values that are consistent with equal rights and of course, she did the right thing. After the sound bites hit the media, many people took a proverbial bite out of Mrs. Sherrod, but later revised their statements after "the rest of the story was heard." The NAACP was compelled to offer an apology for pre-judging her comments. While the USDA and the White House had some extreme back peddling to do, offering Mrs. Sherrod her job back. She even received a personal call from President Barack Obama expressing his remorse over the fiasco. The national media was quick to use this episode to launch racial opinions about the White House. Last week, in an op-ed piece for the New York Times Maureen Dowd wrote, The White House Is Too White.” In that same article she referenced the NAACP’s Georgia chapter president, our guest tonight , Mr. Edward Dubose wondering why Ben Jealous President of the NAACP rushed to judgment without calling Mr. Dubose. Last time I checked, he relocated from Chicago to the White House. Anyway, I am urging African Americans and other responsible folks to stand up. I am particularly calling out the Christian churches, with whom the civil rights movement forged alliance in the past against this foolishness. Please, stop calling in financial harvests, love offerings and other solicitations for money and get with the business of doing the Lord's work in the community against the devil's divisive machination of racism. You will be held accountable. Your work was designated by God in Luke 4:18. My dear disenfranchised people, this is not the back of the whip, nor is it the bite of a dog or the rush of a water house, but it is a call to rally against ignorance, bigotry and racism in all the subtle and not so subtle forms. Or would you rather we return to the back of the whip, the bite of the dog or the rush of the water hose. What you do not remember, you may be forced to repeat. By the way, who thinks the ship's hull found underneath ground zero at the trading capital of the world may be an old slave ship? Great place to bury an old trading vehicle with a new one! We are watching the oil, talking about the oil, praying about the oil, and agonizing over the oil. The oil leak in the Gulf is predominating all of the other topics. Something about this oil obsession sounds familiar in a spiritual sense. Interestingly, the oil of the Holy Spirit is the one thing we should be talking about, praying about and agonizing over. The Holy Spirit is a Comforter, a discerner of the thoughts and the intents of the heart, and our interpreter when speaking to Father God; yet we are not as obsessive in our conversations about the Holy Spirit. In fact, sometimes we seem to forget the Holy Spirit will leave the earth. Moving forward, why not endeavor to talk about the Oil of the Spirit with obsessive, compulsive, orderly, disorder! After all, having a leak in your spiritual cup produces a gulf between you and God - a far greater consequence than the oil leaking in the Gulf.01:00:00Talking To Tashanooil spill,Gulf of Mexico, spiritual Gulf of Mexico, day 56,Holy SpiritWe are all, understandably obsessed with the Gulf Oil Spill (caps required). Still today that verse reverberates every time something does not work out the way I want or if things work out the way I want, regardless, the promises of God are yes and Amen. Even when God says no, it is a yes because it is followed by an Amen in another place in time. In the business arena, having an M.B.A. and a job at an international firm is top of the game. For others, earning a law degree, or working as a doctor is highly esteemed. Rarely is success measured in service oriented or community related occupations. In biblical terms, success is defined as being "a servant of the Lord." The lives of most of the main characters in the bible are defined as successful because they were God's emissaries. However, many of God’s servants in the bible were also successful in earthly terms. Abraham, David, and King Solomon were all very wealthy men. There is a definite contrast to our estimation of success today. When you look at your life and the things you have acquired both educational and material, do you believe you are successful? Are you successful spiritually as well as secularly? I love how Jesus dealt with this kind of stuff, my Lord said, "out of the mouth proceeds the abundance of the heart." No need to apologize dude, you spoke what you actually feel. Now here are my feelings on the matter. News flash…many African American women have a similar "aversion” to sleeping with white men...kind of stems from the old raping thing that went on during slavery. Some of those encounters with the slave Masters were sadomasochist, since the women were tied up, raped and beaten. My grandmother was suspicious of white men based on the things she witnessed and the stories that were passed down to her via oral tradition...the white slave traders were described in the Interesting Slave Narrative of Olaudah Equiano as barbarians. Perhaps John Mayer should read a book to uncover the root of his aversion, since it is most likely a reaction to our aversion toward them because of the cruelty our ancestors experienced during slavery. This should be blasted in the pulpits. However, mainstream ministers won’t deal with racism because they don’t see black and white …they see green…straight up pulpit pimpin. Well on Talking To Tasha we get down and dirty from the modernized but spiritualized perspective for this generation...you want to apologize, call me up. This kind of thinking can lead us to make generalizations about people of other races, which results in what is termed reverse racism. As I pondered and mused upon this again today, I heard directly in my spirit...the greater the trials, the greater the miracles. From that whispered Word, I had an epiphany from the Holy Spirit. If I faced the fire, Jesus would show up in it with me as He did with the Hebrew boys. If I refused to withdraw my allegiance to God in the face of a ruling dynasty, I could lie down and nap with lions without becoming their lunch like Daniel, and like Abraham, if I was willing to step out on faith with no assurance of resources and leave everything that was known and comfortable to me to follow Christ to places unknown, I would be called the friend of God, or stand like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. against a racially, malignant country for the sake of the poor and the oppressed - even unto death, but get a glimpse of the promised land. The garden temptations occur, when you are in a state of apparent bliss, like Eve, unsuspecting and not watching. The wilderness temptations indicates a state of agonizing, like Jesus, you are probably very alert and suspecting. Both Eve and Jesus were in a sinless state when accosted by the tempter. Eve fell due to a lustful appetite for power and presumed that God would keep her from harm even if she disobeyed. The enemy assumed he had a tried and true trick and used the same method against Jesus in the wilderness. He tempted Jesus to give in to appetite, power, and presumption, but prevailed not. Although the Israelites were forbidden to marry outside the fold, they intermarried with the Egyptians, the Moabites, and the Ammonites. Unfortunately, the mixed multitude was the cause of much strife, division, and disobedience in the camp. The Bible says many of them fell in the wilderness due to unbelief and the mixed multitude was partly to blame. Recently, Professor Bill Gates, noted for his research in genealogy revealed that our First Lady Michelle Obama was of mixed heritage. Her great-great grandfather says Gates, was white. His mixed heritage report resulted in mixed feelings due to the mixed message of jubilation - especially since most of the mixed relations during slavery were forced. Knowing we are all ethnically mixed to some degree how do we come to terms with the concept of God preserving Israel from intermarrying to preserve His Word. How do we then reconcile Ruth the Moabitess who is in the lineage of Jesus? I tackled it to my satisfaction and resolved to use a vacuum for the impossible to reach remnants. As I headed toward the broom closet, I noticed more of the same underneath the island in the kitchen. A little disgruntled I lowered myself and realized there was as much dirt under the island as I had emptied into the trash can! At this point, I was irritated. Sweeping the floor had worn me out. Some of us get excited no matter what book or chapter we land on in the Word, because we understand this is God speaking directly to us, and that alone makes our toes curl thinking about and anticipating the day we meet our Savior face to face.
