Show Recap: SD vs NYG

by Talk Football

 - Sat, Nov 14 2009

In this episode, Giants punter Jeff Feagles uses two hands instead of one, linebackers Danny Clark and Antonio Pierce kiss and make up, and center Shaun O’Hara explains that it all comes down to faith.

Looking through the eyes of a six-year-old, in this case, Joey Bones, you could plainly see that Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was playing not to lose this past Sunday by opting to go for a field goal instead of a touchdown late in the game. Deemed as a very conservative decision by NY media standards, it ultimately cost the Giants the game and left a very fragile fan base even more dejected and doubtful than the week before. With last Sunday’s 21-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers (5-3), the New York Giants (5-4) will now be heading into their bye week having dropped four in a row.

The sad thing about Sunday’s devastating loss was that the Giants were actually playing with a sense of urgency and ended up with zero turnovers, something that plagued them the previous two weeks. QB Eli Manning completed seventy-six percent of his passes producing a 112.6 passer rating. Manning also threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns. League-leading WR Steve Smith caught eight of those passes and scored on a touchdown to even the score at seven.

As for the defense, CB Terrell Thomas (INT), linemen Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck were able to disrupt Chargers QB Philip Rivers until he administered an 18-yard TD strike to WR Vincent Jackson with less than forty seconds left that put San Diego up by one. The touchdown as well as the loss sent Coughlin and Co. further downward into what is becoming a very disappointing season.

Even with Big Blue’s inconsistent play of late, Talking Giants Football’s Anthony C. Wayne can still see the light at the end of the tunnel for his favorite team. However, his co-host, Tommy L. Biggs, isn’t so convinced that this particular group of players has the wherewithal to be able to pick up where the previous Giants teams left off. Biggs wholeheartedly feels that without someone who breeds confidence and camaraderie like a Michael Strahan, this current Giants lineup will always come up short, week in and week out.

Tommy Romero of Mets Public Record fame joins the show and gives his two cents regarding the struggling New York Giants. Romero, Biggs, and Wayne discuss the surprising play of the Cincinnati Bengals and the importance in NFL teams to be on the upswing at this point of the season if they are going to make a run for the post-season.
