T Pain "The Iron Way" Live Mixtape Review

    in Music

Few people can accurately say they’ve changed the course of music; count T-Pain among that short list. His bright, polished arrangements have become the in-demand sound across genres, and his scene-stealing vocal performances are among the most coveted in music. Since bursting on the scene in 2005, T-Pain has been awarded a Grammy, produced and written a plethora of chart-topping and platinum-selling singles, garnered "Songwriter of the Year" and "Producer of the Year" honors at the BMI Urban Awards and earned a BET Award. So it should come as little surprise that the musical maestro’s tremendous, self-produced third album, THR33 RINGZ, stands as a sonic odyssey brimming with innovation.

Indeed, T-Pain can speak from that perspective because he knows what it is like to struggle. His Tallahassee, Florida hometown was lacking music industry opportunities and connections, so the man born Faheem Najm chose the T-Pain moniker to signify his plight. He taught himself how to make music, write songs and record music.

T-Pain’s use of the vocoder made his music stand out, and his prolific, high-quality output turned him into one of music’s most oft-imitated and in-demand producers, singers and collaborators. His first two albums, 2006’s Rappa Ternt Sanga and 2007’s Epiphany, have been certified gold, thanks to hit singles such as “I’m N Luv (Wit A Stripper)” and “Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’).” He has also collaborated with Kanye West (Good Life), Chris Brown (“Kiss Kiss”) Flo Rida (Low) Plies (Shawty) and Bow Wow (“Outta My System”) for platinum singles.

The legendary John Dolphin, also known as Lovin’ John, was one of the most well respected black businessmen who made his way in the music business in the 1940s and 50s well before Motown ever existed. An independent record label owner and R&B producer, his contributions to the formative years of Rock & Roll are often overlooked. Lovin John, a minimogul who had almost every facet of the record business covered, had taken Los Angeles by storm and brought people of all colors together through music.

Dolphin first entered the Los Angeles music scene as a retailer in 1948, when he opened Dolphin’s of Hollywood, a record store near the corner of Vernon and Central Avenue, the music mecca of the west coast, that would stay open 24 hours a day to cater to the late-shift workforce. The store featured deejays like Huggy Boy and Hunter Hancock broadcasting on the local station of KRKD, in front of the huge, glass window Mr. Dolphin had installed on the face of the store so that people on the outside could see in. Some of the most popular deejays found a home for their art in front of this window, playing for late night crowds of Blacks, Whites, and Latinos alike, who would dance and party together well after dark, until the cops came and shut the parties down.

    Indie Books #80 (David Robert)

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guest.

Author David Robert joins me this week to talk about his book: Wanderlush.

When David, a self-proclaimed anxiety-ridden introvert, convinces himself he’s dying of cancer, he invites his delightfully unpredictable, -popping, chardonnay-swilling mother on a series of international good-bye vacations. By doing so, he unwittingly opens a Pandora’s Box of hilarious and humiliating events that will test just how far they are willing to go to get a laugh.

David knows the trips will be anything but boring because he and his mom have been causing a scene for as long as he can remember. He describes her as a cross between Bea Arthur and Karen Walker from Will and Grace, and she is notorious for bending the rules.

But nothing can prepare him for escapades that include digging his mom out of a rain gutter in Costa Rica and being dragged across the Arabian Desert by a psychotic camel named Forrest Hump. As the vacations unfold, David discovers that although he and his mom are having the time of their life, she is ready to share a secret that will change everything.
