CAROLINA CROW GIRL
By Valerie Hobbs
Valerie Hobbs is a well-respected author of numerous young adult novels. She is recognized for her ability to infuse her characters with remarkably authentic thoughts, motivations, and behaviors that realistically capture the life experiences of young people as they move from child to teen to young adult. Carolina Crow Girl is a splendid example of this ability, and explores the themes of culture and diversity, character, values and friendship with sensitivity and respect. Carolina is not looking forward to starting sixth grade at a new school and being the new girl again. This time, she decides she’ll say her father is an astronaut, lost in space. She’s learned to cope with the uncomfortable routine of standing in front of the class, introducing herself, and telling about her family by creating fantastical versions of a non-existent father. Anything’s better than telling the class she lives in an old yellow school bus with her single mother, Melanie, and baby sister, Trinity. And anyway, it won’t be long before Melanie has them on the move again, in her endless search for Trinity’s father, Red. But this time, things happen differently. Carolina takes on the care of a baby crow after finding it on the ground below its nest. And she meets Stefan Crouch, whose family owns the land on which Melanie has parked their bus. Carolina becomes fond of her new home, and as her friendship with Stefan grows, his family offers an alternative to moving on with her mother and sister. As she considers the family’s offer, Carolina must come to terms with her own beliefs about freedom, family and belonging.

As a society, when we think of rape or sexual abuse we are likely to assume that the victims are female and the perpretrators are male. That is a gross misconception. There are many more female perpretrators and male victims than most of us are aware of.
Today's special guest Donald B. Jeffries, President/Executive Director and founder of Mariposa Men’s Wellness Institute, a nonprofit focused on the promotion of men's emotional wellness through education and training, is here to discuss the cultural blindness that exists concerning the prevalence of male sexual abuse and the profound negative effects this abuse has on male victims.
Researchers have found that 1 in 6 men (a modest estimate) have been sexually abused before the age of 18. And alarming statistics show that women can and do sexually abuse and assault adult men, though it rarely gets reported. The unfortunate truth is that because males simply aren’t allowed to be victims (or at least not allowed to be seen as such), they are are often more emotionally damaged than females by society’s refusal or reluctance to accept their victimization.
The goal of this show is to raise awareness of the prevalence of male sexual abuse, thereby raising the level of help, compassion, and healing that is available to these victims.
This will be a very powerful show. Be sure to save the date and tune in .

Growing up as a young girl on St. John, in the US Virgin Island Teshanne Phillip fondly recalls the island women who served as her mentors. Now, with the release of her first book, Elevate, Phillip hopes to empower young women in the Virgin Islands — and nationwide — by sharing her own experiences and by teaching them about subjects like forgiveness, achieving greatness, and setting and accomplishing goals.
“I am so excited about this new project, and I am blown away by the feedback that I’ve been receiving on the book,” said Phillip.
The St. John native, who graduated from Ivanna Eudora Kean High School in 1999, today lives in South Florida where she leads a mentorship program at a foster home. Her relationship with the young women in the home inspired her to help others achieve greatness.
Phillip’s passion for the girls in the foster home is evident as she speaks about her interactions with them. Ranging in age from 14 to 17, the young women were removed from their homes due to their parents passing away or being incarcerated. Some of the teens have been in the home from a very young age.

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "Child Abuse, Trauma and 12-Step Recovery" - STEP 2 - SCAN host Bill Murray will be joined by special guest co-host Rivka Edery, MSW, LCSW, from NYC, author of the book “Trauma and Transformation: A 12-Step Guide." Together they will lead tonight's discussion on STEP 2: "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." Step Two is about asking for help, and being receptive to receiving this help. Survivors, especially, often hide their fundamental lack of trust. Operating in a superficial world, fighting for respect, and lacking in support to pursue a spiritual life, survivors press ahead in spite of their collection of battle scars. Such people find themselves greatly challenged to maintain an appearance of having it all together, and are longing to trust and to be fully expressed. Survivors are struggling with courage and determination to make their lives work, in spite of this great, gaping wound. ~~ A child abuse survivor herself, Rivka Edery is grateful for the spiritual recovery she found in the 12 Steps of AA. She's been active in the 12 Step community for over 17 years. Bill Murray credits his 30 plus years of recovery to the spiritual power of the 12 Step program, too. He founded the recently launched Adult Survivors of Child Abuse Anonymous (ASCAA). ~~ Join us every two weeks to further examine a 12 Step approach to recovery from abuse. Next show we'll address STEP 3. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/Trauma-12Step or write to Rivka at: email@example.com
