We have all experienced writers block and here is the scenario. We are writing something great, meaningful, our best work and then boom we run out of steam, creativeness and more. Writers block has been a nightmare that has plagued thousands of writers over the centuries and now I am going to share some techniques that I use to avoid the nightmare. The voices in our head have gone silent. What do we do to bring our muse back? In this episode, the Write Pack explores breaking writer’s block. Some say it doesn’t exist. Others say it does. There are thousands (or more) books and articles on how to break it. How do the members of the Write Pack break writer’s block?
What are the things that cause writers block? Stress? Fear of Failure?
Some techniques we talk about: Throwing darts, writing in the buff, writing in the tub, free form writing, talking to yourself on the computer, free typing (or “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy), dropping inhibitions, writing at the crack of dawn, using different medias, writing in different locations, writing a draw novel, practice another art, get away from what you are used to, writing in colors, using lists, writing prompts, using dice, using pictures for inspiration, writing in a different language, write something purposefully terrible, using music, use meditation, using radio dramas, watching TV or movies, using headlines, , use take two different ideas and combine them, using fandom, give yourself a deadline, rewarding yourself, and more….
One of the most important questions for writers can also help break writers block: “What if?”
I’ve lived in San Diego most my life and love it here! I have a Business Degree from Cal Poly, Pomona and started to work in marketing at Hewlett-Packard Co. after graduation. I was able to use my creativity and writing skills in my job as a trade show specialist at H.P. I’m married and have two daughters that are in college who have inspired me to write Young Fiction/Middle Grade chapter books. As I would volunteer in their classes, I would notice that many students would struggle as they read chapter books. I also noticed that the books they liked to read the most were books that had action, adventure, and many were mysteries. I observed from raising my kids that the better they could read, the easier it was to keep up in their classes in middle school, high school and college. Therefore, I began to create my characters and eventually write a series of chapter books called The Adventures of Sophie and Scottie. The feedback I’ve been getting from students in grades 3 and up has been amazing! The readers can relate to the main characters, Sophie and Scottie, as well as the support characters that can be almost anything! I’m inspired from the feedback and the awards I’ve received to continue with this series. I have two books published: Sophie and Scottie’s Adventures of the Monarch Mystery, and Sophie and Scottie’s Adventures of Something’s Fishy. My third book, Sophie and Scottie’s Adventures of Sweet Tooth Rock is now in editing.
