The Wounded Warrior Caregivers: Unsung Heroes
Our American Soldiers protect the nation without hesitation. They make the ultimate sacrifice daily in order to uphold the constitution. But when a service member is wounded, ill, or injured, these changes place tremendous stress on family members. As the Wounded Warrior Project states “injuries from the battlefield last a lifetime.” The Caregivers of Wounded Warriors are an integral part of a warrior's successful recovery. However, they are often times forgotten. The Wounded Warriors Caregivers Facebook Group extends a helping hand. Join us as Megan Morseth, Administrative Officer share moments of hope and perseverance.

In January 2014, Professional Options hosted a Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) meeting at Poulsbo City Hall so area veterans could learn about how to benefit from WWP. Attendees hear about successes and challenges our veterans and their families face after serving and sacrificing for our country, and how the services provided by WWP allow them to move forward with their "new normal."
WWP provides support and services to post-Sept. 11 veterans such as college scholarships and stipends; cash grants to service providers to cover basic needs like food, rent and utilities; physical and psychological rehabilitation; combat stress recovery; benefits assistance; peer support; and career development and training. In 2012 alone, it spent $114 million to aid wounded veterans, their families and their caregivers.
The meeting was WWP's first time in Kitsap, and a Wounded Warriors in Kitasp (WWIK) group (no affiliation with WWP) was loosely formed and communicates via a Facebook page.
Join us as we talk with regional WWIK advocates and leaders Charles Keating, Todd Best, and Jeremy Creed about what's ahead.

John Roberts from Wounded Warrior Project joins VOW Talk Radio to discuss PTSD.
Warrior Relations Executive Vice President at Wounded Warrior Project, John Roberts served in the US Marine Corps from 1982 to 1996, when he received a medical discharge following a prolonged recovery from wounds suffered in the crash of a helicopter in the seas of Somalia at the beginning of Operation Restore Hope.
In that 1992 crash, John suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body, resulting in the loss of use of his left leg. His right arm was nearly severed; though doctors were able to reattach the arm, John suffers a serious loss of use of this extremity as well. Following military service, John wasted no time in starting a career devoted to his fellow wounded veterans. His first job was with the Disabled American Veterans, working as a national service officer in the organization’s office in Houston, Texas.
On March 29, 2007 – exactly 15 years after the date of his injury – John left the VA to become national service director for Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP). He was later promoted to the position of mental health and family support executive vice president and today served as warrior relations executive vice president. In this role, John works with all WWP program staff to ensure the most effective, beneficial warrior experience possible.
We will be talking with John Roberts about life after combat, PTSD and ways to adjust to life after war.
