Who are the most important people in your life?
The most popular answer to that question is: “My family.” For most of us, “family” represents those individuals who believe in us and trust us to provide them with the necessities of life.
I now ask you to begin thinking of your family as your Personal Board of Directors. These are the people to whom you have the greatest responsibility and who will benefit the most from your successful job search. They are also the individuals who endure hardship if your search is unproductive and there’s no other source of income. Put another way, your Personal Board of Directors deserves to have you working at nothing less than peak performance during your search.
That’s why learning to detach from the grip of The Black Hole is so essential. While The Black Hole is a no-brainer to use, that personal comfort level comes with a steep price tag: no acknowledgement of resumes and cover letters, no status updates via e-mail or phone calls, and no invitations for interviews … just to name a few. And getting miserable results like that does nothing to support your Personal Board of Directors.
Science has been called a boring subject with deep topics. Certainly too deep for the propagandists out of the PMO. Applied sciences will serve the CPC agenda, or they will be ignored. Canada has a long, storied history in scientific development, be it for institutional, research or commercial purposes. Humanity is at the beginning of another scientific revolution. Our mathematics and supercomputing is enabling and verifying our very nature.
The language of science, the processes of science, the risk/reward of new discoveries and the ethics of them are all complex areas that defy simple, catchy explanation. Investment, data, experimentation, application and free exchange of findings are all critical pieces of the puzzle. Yet the Harper government has shown little regard for this field in which Canada has historically punched above its weight. Climate change, green energy, medicine, computing, space exploration - science seeks to increase the safety of our existence by tackling these issues and many more.
For the past 25 years, Graham has worked in Canada and USA, in manufacturing, as a special machine designer. If you can buy it, he can make it, or make 1000 per second, all it takes is time and money. Graham was trained on the same design software as NASA used for its space stuff, and five others since. His first design workstation cost $250,000, almost like having a tiny physics universe to play on. Being an expert at applying new technology to answer challenges, he has special insights into advanced controls systems, exotic manufacturing process, lean manufacturing, executive expertise, project management experience, technical communication and eliminating your competition. Starting with a smart design can accomplish more than any single step in business can deliver. Remember, your customer is running the show, so do your due diligence, kick back and make some money and help the planet.

Gamification works pretty well if you're making the latest mobile game, but most enterprises are struggling with it. In fact, mention gamification in the enterprise and you're likely to get a lot of groans and people who say, "we tried that. It didn't work." If that's your experience, out latest IT Life Radio guest, Steve Sims CDO of Badgeville's Behavior Lab, will tell you that you've probably been doing it all wrong. On Wednesday, May 6th at 3PM ET, he'll tell us all about how to do it right.
Gamification can be a tool of transformation in your enterprise. It can be used to achieve those pesky goals you're having trouble reaching, change hearts and minds, and to learn new skills. You can use it to measure progress in an organization and even to improve morale.
Do it wrong, and you're adding hassle and effort to an organization pressed for time. And you are likely to turn off your employees. So you better listen to Steve tell you how to do it right.
We'll talk to Steve about:
Aligning gamification to the needs of your enterprise
Using gamification in education and training
Making employees happier and more engaged

Paul Cobb grew up in West Oakland and attended Howard University and spent time in the southern Civil Rights Movement, then returned to the Bay Area and was a founding member of the Donald Warden's Afro-American Association (Maulana Ron Karenga was the Los Angeles representative), the organization that gave birth to the Black Panthers (Bobby Seale, Huey Newton, et al) and the west coast Black Arts Movement (Marvin X). Paul established OCCUR, a social activist organization that fought for jobs on state highway projects. Paul went to jail protesting the non-hiring of Blacks. He also went to jail demanding the Oakland Public Schools hire a black superintendent, which it eventually did, Marcus Foster (assassinated by the SLA) and later hired Dr. Ruth Love. Paul worked at the Oakland Post, Oakland Tribune and served on the School Board. He eventually bought the Oakland Post and eventually hired Chauncey Bailey as editor.
