Carter Godwin Woodson (Dec. 19, 1875 – April 3, 1950) was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Woodson was one of the first scholars to study African-American history. A founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1915, Woodson has been cited as the father of black history. In Feb. 1926 he announced the celebration of "Negro History Week", considered the precursor of Black History Month.
Carter G. Woodson was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, the son of former slaves, James and Eliza Riddle Woodson. His father helped Union soldiers during the Civil War and moved his family to West Virginia when he heard that Huntington was building a high school for blacks.
Coming from a large, poor family, Carter could not regularly attend school. Through self-instruction, he mastered the fundamentals of common school subjects by age 17. Wanting more education, Carter went to Fayette County to earn a living as a miner in the coal fields. He was able to devote only a few months each year to his schooling.
In 1895, at the age of 20, Woodson entered Douglass High School, where he received his diploma in less than two years. From 1897 to 1900, Woodson taught at Winona in Fayette County. In 1900 he was selected as the principal of Douglass High School. He earned his Bachelor of Literature degree from Berea College in Kentucky in 1903 by taking classes part-time between 1901 and 1903.

Another year has come and we're faced again with the idea of celebrating the accomplishments of the African American community or better yet our ancestors from a not too distant past and for all their achievements we're going to try to sum it up in the course of a month and call it simply... Black history! Native Americans, African Americans, Latin Americans have all somehow been excluded from American history and today we want to ask a question how when this country was founded on the backs (almost literally) of these very people, but somehow they've all seem to have been forgotten inside of the American history in, and somehow they've all seem to have been forgotten for their contributions, for their charities, for their hard work, for their sacrifices, for their very lives given to build this country to where it is today. We'll address that in our segment: "It aint history unless you include this"!
Are we still affected by slavery today? Was slavery a plot by the "white man" to keep us down or biblical prophesy for disobedience to God and his commandments? Come and join us as we discuss this Black history topic.

If you have never heard of the founding member of super group Earth, Wind & Fire, singer, drummer, songwriter, and producer, Maurice White, then you don’t know great music. He was known for his stagecraft and inventive compositions. Let me tell you about the TrueMovement created by this man.
Maurice "Reese" White was born on December 19, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee and was a guiding force behind the success of Earth Wind & Fire. He helped compose hit songs like two of my personal favorites, "Shining Star" and "September."
Celebrating the music and the man. Listen now and read more here.
