JOIN US ON MONDAY, MAY 25, 2015 AT 6:30PM WITH SPECIAL GUEST DR. MEKEL HARRIS! DR. HARRIS WILL BE DISCUSSING THE PROCESS OF GRIEF AND THE MYRIAD OF WAYS THAT IT PRESENTS ITSELF AND ALSO EDUCATING THE AUDIENCE ON THE BEST WAY TO SUPPORT A FRIEND OR LOVED ONE THROUGH THIS PROCESS.
Mekel Harris, Ph.D., NCSP is a licensed psychologist, Associate Professor, community advocate, and mentor in Los Angeles, California. In her professional work, Dr. Harris focuses on health and wellness and has a particular interest in providing therapy targeting grief and loss. On a personal note, she experienced the death of her beloved mother in December 2012, only 30 days after her mother's diagnosis with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Since then, Dr. Harris has made it her mission to share her grief journey, educate the community about grief and loss, and inspire others traveling down this challenging and sometimes dark, emotional road. Her memoir, "Relaxing into the Pain: My Journey into Grief and Beyond," charts Dr. Harris' own journey through the grief process and will be released in late summer 2015.
Women around the world are being brutalized in the name of "culture." Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation seeks to end all practices that violate women - that includes domestic violence, sex trafficking, rape and female genital mutilation. Education and economic empowerment will enable women to eradicate the culture of violence against women. Many women unknowingly perpetuate such a culture, out of wrong beliefs that they have no choice but to submit to cruelty. Today's guest, Angela Peabody, head of Global Woman PEACE Foundation, will discuss the organization's work in empowering women worldwide. As we look ahead to the year 2020, the 100th year of the 19th Amendment that gave U.S. women the right to vote, we look at how women can use their collective power to organize globally to end war and violence everywhere.
Alana Sholar and Bobbie Thompson are a married couple who live in central Kentucky. What is unique about this couple is that Alana is a male-to-female transwoman and Bobbie is a biologically gendered woman.
Alana, born as Alan in 1961, a time and place where the word transgender was not known, lived and worked on Kentucky thoroughbred horse farms and trained to be a jockey. He also worked various blue collar jobs such as construction, trucking and factory work.
Alana believed the most difficult task to ever face in life would be telling family and friends she is transgender, but it wasn't. Within months of coming out as transgender she had to tell them that she had been diagnosed as HIV positive.
Bobbie knew Alan for approximately 25 years and the even shared a traditional male/female relationship in the mid-1990's. Nearly a decade passed when Bobbie saw Alan again in 2006, only this time Alan (he) had become Alana (she). Freaked out, Bobbie told Alana she didn't want to have anything to do with her. Two years later they were married.
Alana is the author of Hung in the Middle: A Journey of Gender Discovery, and Bobbie tells her side of the story in her memior My Husband Looks Better in Lingerie Than I Do...Damn It.
Today they still live in the same same Kentucky town where Sholar grew up as a male. They have a blended family of three children, four grandchildren, and two dogs.

Host Faith Chatham presents special guest Texas Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster Tony Bridge, Jr. and newspaper woman, author, civil rights activist and former radio station news director Gail K. Beil. We'll look back over the past 60 years of media and compare it with today. Mr. Tony Bridge, Jr. acquired ownership of an AM/FM station in the East Texas market in the 1950s. Faith and Gail met in the early 1970s while employed at a Harte Hanks Communication daily newspaper in that same market. Together Gail and Faith have worked for at least 5 national newspaper chains. Tony experiences extends far beyond his local station. Faith has owned and operated creative shops, independent "full-serviice" advertising agencies and marketing companies, and served as media consultant for DFW based Fortune 500 Companies. At one time Gail was the News Director at a Radio Station in Marshall, Texas in competition with Tony Bridge's station. Gail has done advance work for Bill Moyers, covered environmental, political, education and historical beats. She is best known as the biographer of James Farmer, Jr. and was recently awarded the Denzel Washington Team Support Award for her service to the Wiley Great Debaters. This will be a live show. When these three old friends get together, the conversation is usually brisk, informative, unpredictable, and humorous!
