On June 17, 2015, the love of my life, my wife of 25 years, died of acute organ failure. After the funeral home people came to our home and took her away from me forever, I had one question:
I intend for this to be an upbeat, often humorous look at a serious subject. Over the weeks and months to come, we will talk to experts in the field of grief, surviving the death of a spouse, the unique challenges of being a man who outlived his wife, insurance issues, social security, and what NOT to say to a not-particularly-religious person on the occasion of the death of his soulmate.
And we'll take your calls and try our best to answer your questions as well.

Gaill and I were not what one would call religious people. We both believed in God, but not the same one that the right wing American Taliban Religiofascists believe should be running our nation. I've had time to consider my beliefs in the nearly five months since Gail died. I guess if you were to put my beliefs on a peg, that peg would be labeled "Unitarian Universalist." I won't tell you what to believe. I expect the same courtesy. When good people tell me Gail is "in a better place," I have to wonder, "you mean, better than being with the man she loved for 27 years?" When they tell me it's "God's Will," I wonder where the supreme juggler finds time with his having to operate an entire universe to decide when Gail was supposed to die. I reject the right wing American Taliban Religiofascist view that the Bible outranks the Constitution. And on this show, you will hear why.

The Wrath of Brotherhood
After learning of his sister’s death at the hands of pirates, successful merchant Captain Roy Toppings sails to the Caribbean on a misguided mission of vengeance against the man who failed to protect her: her Spanish widower, Pablo Francisco.
In the climate of the Restoration-era Caribbean colonies, where scheming and stealth could yield a prize as readily as boldness and firepower, Roy's vendetta lands him and his small but talented privateer crew in the middle of political intrigue and a deadly invasion in the West Indies as the nations of Europe struggle to consolidate power in anticipation of new monarchs in England and France.
When Spain prepares a strike that could jeopardize all other commercial interests in the Caribbean, Roy must risk losing his chance at vengeance to fight for his nation and his fellow Brethren of the Coast.

The campaign to celebrate the nation’s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm–perhaps because, as one florist explained, “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane,Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C.In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As

Our passage from the Word of God today is Psalms 71:9. It reads, "Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth."
Our quote for today is from Henry Ward Beecher. He said, “To all who find their days declining, to all upon whom age is creeping with its infirmities, to all whose strength seems steadily to ebb....God seems to take our last things, and as it were, pack them up for our journey. These are tokens that you are approaching land. They are signs that the troubles of the sea are almost over.”
Our problem today is "The Problem of Aging in Your Life" (part 1) from the book, "The Guide to Biblical Counseling" by Dr. Tim Clinton and Dr. Ron Hawkins.
