When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade!

    in Lifestyle

Join us in a conversation with Teneyse Williams, co-founder of Dapper Dads Magazine in a conversation about small business ownership and entrepreneurship.

Accordingly to NPR, although the national unemployment rate has fallen steadily in recent months, youth unemployment remains high, and the jobless rate is even higher among young minorities. For young people between the ages of 16 and 24, unemployment is more than twice the national rate, at 14.2 percent. For African-Americans, that rate jumps to 21.4 percent.

Our conversation tonight will highlight a young entrepreneur as a way to inspire our youth to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career option and to be optimistic about their future. We want to encourage them to embrace a can-do attitude in the face of high unemployment statistics, adversity or misfortune.  Also, we want to remind them that when life gives them lemons, which is a metaphor for bitterness and disappoint, that they have the potential to create an opportunity for themselves where they can turn those lemons into lemonade to make it sweeter and advantageous to them.

    Transforming your Shame into Worthiness

    in Spirituality

Transforming Your Shame into Worthiness Part 2:  Bind and Shatter the Patterns of Shame

Hosted by:  Dr. Deirdre J. Burrell, DAOMc, LAc

With Guest: Patricia A. Parham, Ph.D.

Our guest for the series, Dr. Pat says that America is a shame-based society. Most of us hide something about ourselves of which we are ashamed. How do you know if you have shame – what names do we give to it? What does it feel like? What kinds of behaviors show that we are ashamed? And, most importantly, if we find shame within ourselves, what can we do about it? How do we get rid of it and become whole?

In part 2 we will learn though shame begins in childhood, we reinforce and nurture it as adults without realizing it. Let’s explore what triggers shame in us, the impact these triggers have on our interactions with others, and what emotions erupt when we act out. There may be many triggers, but our reactions become fixed in predictable patterns of shame-based behavior.  These must be shattered to  start the process of healing.

We do not have to react. Emotions only control us when we allow it. How can we use the Teachings of the Ascended Masters to break these patterns and transform them into healthy responses? Who in our support network will nurture us during this transition? This work cannot be done alone; you must learn to reach out and accept help.

Our guest, Patricia Parham, PhD. is a Community Psychologist, who is also an Organization Development Practitioner and Leadership Coach, who has more than 20 years experience working with private, non-profit and government organizations. She specializes in leadership development, coaching, and organizational change.

Terry Burrus performs a wide variety of music from the grooves of house and techno to traditional jazz to classical to R&B Soul genres. Terry Burrus can take it even further with hard groove and dance tracks that's being featured on his forthcoming album. Burrus strives to create musical projects that can be described as tasteful and enjoyable. But it was not always the case for the pianist in the beginning. Alot of years, training and learning made him a visionary. Studying Beethoven, Dvorak, Grieg, Mozart, Chopin, he is also deeply rooted in Soul, Jazz, Gospel, and dwells deep in Electronica. Making home between Europe and the United States, his musical journey becomes more exciting and challenging when working with new and exciting people in different genres. The musical versatility is due to the many artists and recordings Terry has worked on as well as his extensive worldwide travels and experiences for years. The native New Yorker learned the piano at age five and became a church organist at Washington Temple in Brooklyn, New York by the time he was seven growing up in that church alongside singers, James" D Train" Williams, Ronnie Dyson and the Reverend Al Sharpton. Terry Burrus studied with Sticks Evans his musical mentor teacher in Junior High School and it was there where Terry put together his Junior High School band as a guitarist which he got quite proficient on and also as a keyboardist. The band would play locally in New York including the prestigious Lincoln Center Performing Arts Center, performing jazz, soul,r&b and Broadway classics. He attended the La Guardia School of Music And Art in New York City diving further into jazz and formal studies and absorbing the concepts of arrangement and counterpoint, he excelled so fast as a musician that by the time he was sixteen he was touing with Jean Carne, Lenny White, Michael Urbaniak, Tom Browne, Melba Moore and others...
