SUICIDE: WHAT ABOUT THOSE LEFT BEHIND?
We’ve all known a friend of a friend, or a family member, or even a celebrity who shocked and dumbfounded us because of his or her suicide. Your children may have school friends who have contemplated or carried out a suicide. Maybe a relative left you wondering for the rest of your life what you could have done. Perhaps you have had thoughts of killing yourself. Not a happy topic, for sure, but one which can affect all of us.
September is suicide awareness month, so this is a perfect time to discuss this topic and find out more about the whys and guilt that can accompany it.
Dr. Jill Harkavy-Friedman is responsible for research for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This includes gathering data from AFSP funded studies and communicating those findings to the larger community and public. She also collaborates on the development of prevention materials such as films, programs and brochures.
Dr. Harkavy-Friedman received her B.A. in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Florida. In 1984 she joined Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute, first as an assistant professor and later an associate professor of clinical psychology in psychiatry.
She has been studying suicidal behavior for more than 25 years and has more than 90 publications. As a licensed psychologist, she maintains a clinical practice at her office in Manhattan.
Joining the show tonight to talk suicide awareness will be mental health therapist, Brandy J. Flynn. Brandy was recently voted Best in Black Memphis Best Consulting / Professional Service for her efforts in the mental health field. I welcome her back to the show to preview her upcoming seminar: Breaking the Barrier of Mental Health: Suicide Awareness Month.
We will discuss how people should pay attention to kids when they cry for help, who has the highest rate of suicide, and more! Below is a summary of what's to come from her 9/27 seminar:
This will be the platform where we can come together to vent, educate, advocate, and possible intervene and prevent suicide form occurring with a love one. Do you know the signs of suicide? Do you know what to do when someone tells you that they want to kill themselves? What if they took the action of suicide? You will gain the answers to these questions and more at the panel talk. I hope to see you there.

About the Tour.
SISFI is hosting our Suicide Awareness and Prevention NY Tour on Sept. 17th - Oct 3rd across NYC, Long Island and Westchester to bring more awareness, services, programs and resources to address the increasing numbers of people facing serious life and emotional challenges, and human suffering with suicide ideations/thoughts, and supporting families who lost loved ones to suicide.
The theme of the tour is “Look into my heart and mind, tell me what you see”. It highlights the realities of not knowing what’s in a person’s mind or on their heart by what we see on the outside, and that we must engage in dialog and allow an open and comfortable atmosphere for people to open up and express themselves. The workshops and radio shows of the tour are scheduled at different times every day across the 3 cities.
We have aligned 15 community workshops, 3 luncheons and 15 radio shows to bring people, mental health professionals, energy therapists, health professionals, survivors and healers together to address this very serious and important topic affecting many people in our communities. While the community workshops are local in the 3 cities, the radio shows will have guests from across the country who lost loved ones, and practitioners who specializes in the support, treatment, recovery and healing of mental health, life coaching, emotional wellness and human suffering.
The tour schedule is at http://sisfi.org/suicidetours.html. Like the tour page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/sisfi.suicideawarenesstours and Follow on Twitter https://twitter.com/SuicideAPTours.

Tonights presentation is a re-broadcast of an earlier teaching.
Starting at Rosh Hashanah, Israel will be going through the Shmitta [Sabbatical] year. Why is that significant? Because it's one way of signifying that Israel [and the world] belongs to G-d. Just as the Jewish people get a rest day one day of the week [Shabbat], the land is to rest every seven years. The Torah gives two reasons to observe Shabbat: to acknowledge G-d as the creator and to remember their liberation form Egypt [Mitzrayim]. Shabbat ultimately sends the Jew two messages: that they acknowledge G-d as the ultimate sovereign and that they're not slaves. And with letting the land rest, it is to acknowledge that the land belongs to G-d. Just as the neshama Yehudi [Jewish soul] naturally clings to Torah, G-dliness, and mitzvot, the land of Israel is a holy land, as seen even from Jewish law [Halacha]. Even when eating, the Jew acknowledges the holiness of Israel. For instance, for olives and apples, both of which is haetz, olives take priority just by being one of the seven species of fruit that Israel is praised for. And the Shmitta acknowledges G-d as the sovereign. It goes back to what Rashi said, when he said that the reason why the Torah did not begin with the first mitzvah, but with the creation of the world, was so then Israel can say that G-d ultimately gave the land to them if the other nations accuse Israel of stealing Canaanite land. Just as Shabbat is something from G-d that's out of this world, so too, Shmitta is something from G-d out of this world. The difference is that whereas the Jew goes by days, Eretz Yisrael [the Land of Israel] goes by years. But it's still the same principle. Shmitta also teaches that just as Klal Yisrael [the community of Israel] is holy, the land is also holy as well and is not merely something to be walked on and taken for granted.
