Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - Dreaming the DREAM

    in Travel

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial lies along  the center line of leadership that extends from the Lincoln Memorial to the Jefferson Memorial on Washington's National Mall.   At 30 feet in height, the sculpture of MLK on the "stone of hope" is 11 feet talller than the statues of Lincoln and Jefferson.

In honor of Dr. King's birthday, we will revisit our coverage of the dedication of his Memorial in 2011.  Over a decade in the making, October 16, 2011 marked the official dedication of this historic Memorial in Washington, DC and the 16th anniversary of the Million Man March.  However, the original dedication date was set for August 28, 201, the 48th anniversary of King's "I Have A Dream" speech.  But, an earthquake in the mid-Atlantic and the untimely visit of Hurricane Irene forced a delay in the official ceremony.  Nonetheless, World Footprints covered all of the dedication events from August through October and today's show shares interviews from celebrities and news makers who participated in the celebrations.  Ambassador Andrew Young, Lalah Hathaway, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rabbi Israel Dresner, and former Secretary of State Madeline Albright will offer their thoughts and memories about Dr. King.

From the official dedication we’ll share music and remarks on the National Mall from Archbishop Desmond TuTu, Stevie Wonder and America's first African-American President, Barak Obama.  From our perspective, watching President Obama walk past the Inscription Wall at the MLK Memorial to the dedication stage to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was incredibly powerful.

Social Justice: The Arousing of Warriors

    in Current Events

In the United States of America, an international activist movement, Black Lives Matter, that campaigns against violence toward black Americans has arrived. Founder Alicia Garza summed up the philosophy saying: "When we say Black Lives Matter, we are talking about the ways in which Black people are deprived of basic human rights and dignity. It is an acknowledgement of black American institutionalized poverty  and genocide by organized state violence. It is an acknowledgment that 1 million Black people are locked in cages in this country which is an act of state violence. The movement uses of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media bringing mass attention to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the murder of  teen  Trayvon Martin. #BlackLivesMatter was voted as one of the twelve hashtags that changed the world in 2014.

Black Lives Matter became nationally recognized during street demonstrations for 2014 killings of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Eric Harris, Walter Scott, Jonathan Ferrell, Sandra Bland, Samuel DuBose,Dontre Hamilton, John Crawford III, Renisha McBride,  and Freddie Gray. Black Lives Matter has  publicly challenge  2016 United States presidential candidates to comment on Black Lives Matter issues.  Black Lives Matter stopped a Bay Area Rapid Transit  train on  one of the biggest shopping days of the year, in order to "stop business as usual" .In December 2015, three thousand people gathered at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota   to protest the killings of unarmed black men by police.

Does Black Americas collectively suffer from "Stockholm Syndrome" where a hostage bonds with, identify with, and sympathize with the captor?
