What a pleasure to watch the inspired growth of this amazing artist! Cheikh Ndoye has been involved in the Washington, D.C. music scene for quite some time now - and the word has traveled to significant ears.
Bassist, Arranger and Composer, Cheikh is originally from Senegal in West Africa. He heard Jazz on the radio in his country as well as the traditional songs of his region. On piano first, he was captivated when he heard the bass of Jaco Pastorius via Weather Report. At 14, then, he started his musical journey. Public exposure was high when young Cheikh traveled to the States with his Sengalese-based band, Opus. At the St. Louis Jazz Festival, he was heard and noticed. Pharoah Sanders was there, as well as Herbie Hancock and more.
Interested in the full immersion of both education and in playing bass, Cheikh found himself in the Jazz-oriented landscape of D.C. Friends and fans gathered to create "A Child's Tale" in 2009. Among the mighty: Randy Brecker, Russell Ferrante and Karen Briggs.
That breathtaking and unique project has gained mileage and paved the way for the anticipation of Cheikh's follow-up, to be called "Linguere." We'll hear brand new tracks from the CD - and we'll hear about the exciting event planned for the first weekend of April at Blues Alley. It will feature our guest and his amazingly talented friends - Karen Briggs among them - in a three-day stint.
What a beautiful mix of Old World and New Contemporary Cheikh presents to us! When you hear it, you'll feel a restoration to your spirit - a gateway to Spring :)
Join us at one p.m. on the FIRST of April, 2014! Two hours of music - and Cheikh Ndoye arrives at three, Eastern.
