the joy of being-practical waysto stay in the moment

    in Spirituality

    The joy of being:

Ask yourself: Is there joy, ease and lightness in what I am doing? If there isn't, then time is covering up the present moment, and life is perceived as a burden or struggle.  If there is no joy, ease, or lightness in what you are doing, it does not necessarily mean that you need to change what you are doing. It may be sufficient to change the how. "How" is always more important than "what".

See if you can give much more attention to the doing than to the result that you want to achieve throught it. Give your fullest attention to whatever the moment presents. This only implies you completely accept what is, because you cannot give your fullest attention to something and at the same time resist it.

Do not be concerned with the fruit of you action:  just simply give attention to the action itself. The fruit will come of its own accord. This is a very powerful spiritual prctice...

    in Sports

The Summer of 1984 was an eventful 3 months for new Commissioner David Stern and the NBA; on the heels of an epic 7-game Finals slugfest between Larry Bird’s World Champion Boston Celtics and Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers, the first of 3 heavyweight bouts in the Decade, the NBA Draft was held in New York City; the Draft would introduce fans to 4 future Hall of Famers who would each write their own chapter in the NBA’s History Books. There was Forward Charles Barkley of Auburn, the rowdy, raucous “Round Mound of Rebound”, his polar opposite, little-known Guard John Stockton of Gonzaga, the majestic Nigerian Center and Number One pick  Akeem “The Dream” Olajuwon from the University of Houston, and the electric (Cue Chicago Bulls Public Address Announcer …”6 foot 6 Guard from North KAR-O-LINA!”)…Michael Jeffrey Jordan. These next-level players would secure the NBA’s rapidly growing stature as the Sport of the Future, with Bird and Magic now at the peak of their powers.  Jordan, Georgetown Center Patrick Ewing and 10 of College Basketball’s best would represent USA Basketball in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, led by iconic and infamous Coach Bobby Knight of Indiana University. Knight, known lovingly as a “Raving Maniac” by his players brought his no-nonsense, drill-sergeant mentality to the USA program and molded yet another Gold Medal Winner. The agony and ecstacy of the Draft process, with its Franchise-changing consequences were never more evident than the summer of ’84.

Patients and Physicians Network about Kidney Cancer

    in Health

The annual Kidney Cancer Symposium was held this year in Miami, Florida.  It was chaired by Dr. Toni Choueiri of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Institute in Boston, and contained a wealth of information for physicians, both urologists and oncologists dealing with kidney cancer.

This year for the first time in many years more patients and patient advocates were included in the mix.  In the past Joyce has been one of 4-5 patients invited to help report the meeting, under the general editorship of Mike Lawing.  This year, in part to celebrate the 25th anniversary oCaleb f the founding of KCA by a kidney cancer patient, more patients were invited to attend, including two from outside the United States: Caleb from Nigeria and Juanita Ruiz from Peru.

Billy Foster, a long-time KCA supporter and jazz musician, was on hand to provide wonderful music for the reception.  He has given us permission to broadcast an interview he recorded with Caleb Egwuenu, founder and president of Stand Up to Cancer Naija, http://www.su2c9ja.org  In Nigeria many people still believe that cancer is "juju" or some harmful magical power inflicted by someone else, or as a result of something you did wrong.  The biggest challenge to managing any cancer is that diagnoses are usually after the cancer is already advanced to a late stage.  For Nigeria as for most developing countries, the management of late stage cancer is beyond the skills and budgets of the health care systems.  Their only hope of managing cancer is to find it at early stages.

DST on BTR 11/23/15: Tigs get Maybin, Lions win, CFBITM, CBBITM, Pistons, Wings

    in Sports

Taylor "Gator" Phillips and Ed Smith break down the Tigers trading Ian Krol and Gabe Speier to the Atlanta Braves for Cameron Maybin, which means Rajai Davis is likely gone. We'd also like to note that the "Tigers sign Zach Greinke" article is a fake article, which means it didn't happen. The Tigers also hired Lloyd McClendon as the AAA Toledo Mud Hens manager.

We also touch on the Lions hiring Rod Wood as president, announcing their relocation on radio to 760 (am) WJR, and winning 18-13 over the Oakland Raiders at Ford Field, which pretty much ruins their chances at getting the first overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, which still stands to be Ole Miss Rebels junior defensive end Robert Nkemdiche.

Moving over to college football, the #9 Michigan State Spartans upset the #3 Ohio State Buckeyes 17-14 at The Horseshoe, and the Michigan Wolverines pull away with a 28-16 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions at Happy Valley.

In college basketball, the Wolverines fell flat against the Xavier Musketeers 86-70 AT HOME, while the Michigan State Spartans blast through Arkansas Pine Bluff 92-46 and took care of the Eastern Michigan Eagles 89-65.

The Pistons beat the Timberwolves 96-86 at Target Center but give one away to the Washington Wizards 97-95 at the Palace of Auburn Hills. They also got destroyed by the Milwaukee Bucks 109-88 on the road.

The Red Wings hang on in regulation to beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 but give up another late third-period game-tying goal and still beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in overtime at Scottrade Center. Plus, former Red Wing Landon Ferraro was claimed off waivers by the Boston Bruins.

    Mother’s Milk #SamiyyahSaafirMuhammad 323.927.2913

    in Family

Samiyyah Saafir-Muhammad was born Jacqueline Glover in New York City in 1951. After spending her early years in foster care, moving four times before the age of three, she settled in with her aunt, following her father’s passing.

While still in elementary school Samiyyah took an interest in helping other students do well, joining “The Future Teachers’ Club” in the fifth grade. As a high school student, Samiyyah became aware her people’s struggle for freedom—witnessing civil rights demonstrations, protests, assassinations and riots—and decided she wanted to help somehow.  It was in this atmosphere that she went off to Northeastern University in Boston where she majored in Education. Her stay there was short-lived, however, as she was introduced to the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and thereafter joined the Nation of Islam. Within the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad University, Samiyyah underwent educational training and worked as a teacher’s assistant.

Since 2005, Samiyyah has had the privilege of serving as the Directress at Muhammad University of Islam in Atlanta, which serves students from Pre-K to the eighth grade. She has been blessed to carry on the 84-year educational tradition, which was started by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his brave followers in the 1930’s.

A widow after 35 years of marriage, Samiyyah presently enjoys the blessing of her and her husband’s nine children: six sons and three daughters, all of whom attended or are attending HBCUs. Samiyyah has been a mother to not only her nine children, but also to her two stepchildren, her nieces and nephews, her eight grandchildren and countless other children and adults in the community who come to her for advice, wisdom and guidance. Affectionately called MamaMiyyah, Samiyyah’s house is never empty.
