Waste management is the collection, transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and the process is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, the environment or aesthetics. Waste management is a distinct practice from resource recovery which focuses on delaying the rate of consumption of natural resources. The management of wastes treats all materials as a single class, whether solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive substances, and tried to reduce the harmful environmental impacts of each through different methods.
Waste management practices differ for developed and developing nations, for urban and rural areas, and for residential and industrial producers. Management for non-hazardous waste residential and institutional waste in metropolitan areas is usually the responsibility of local government authorities, while management for non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste is usually the responsibility of the generator.
Waste collection methods vary widely among different countries and regions. Domestic waste collection services are often provided by local government authorities, or by private companies in the industry. Some areas, especially those in less developed countries, do not have a formal waste-collection system. Disposing of waste in an environmentally-friendly manner is crucial the long term survival of any society.
Making money from garbage or waste is not a recent phenomenon, especially in North America and parts of Europe. Even in Africa solid waste as aluminum and steel are resold to steel and metal work factories. Places like construction sites, yard sales and/or thrash days provide the potential for quick cash as they are repositories of scrap metal. Clothes are recycled at Goodwill and Salvation Army stores. Unfortunately some people aren’t as quick to catch on to the benefits of recycling. Only 32 percent of people in the U.S. recycle. That number has slowly improved over the years, but it’s nowhere near what it should be. Most eco conscious people are well aware of the importance of recycling, but many may need an added incentive. As a result, many local governments have put in place recycling programs that allow people to make money recycling. There are also other creative recycling ideas that pay off in the end. In this episode, we shall consider business in waste.
Mike McCoy and Deanna Reeder discuss the latest civic affairs in the City of Moreno Valley. Guest David Marquez will help recap the 3/3/2015 Study Session and give his input into cleaning up the city. The City's proposal to loan money for fence repairs and how to fund installing median landscaping. Why are the companies that have donation containers failing to register them with the city? Maybe the $800.+ cost? Why do residents discard mattresses and other large items when the city contracts Waste Management to pick them up for free? Are these mattresses coming from other cities or are our residents unaware that with a call they get picked up for free? What can we do to fix this?
