Misunderstood Myanmar - A Review of Dr Koh Kim Seng's Book

    in Books

You are invited to the ICERM Radio Book Review Program.

Date: Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 8:00 pm in EST, New York.

    Host: Chavie Brumer.

Guest and Author: Dr Koh Kim Seng.

We are happy to announce the review of "Misunderstood Myanmar – An Introspective Study Of A Southeast Asian State In Transition".

Join us to listen to the untold stories about Myanmar as Dr. Koh Seng talks about his extensive field work in Myanmar, and reports on his close encounters with the military Junta, and with business and bureaucratic elites.

“This book argues that to understand the vicissitudes of Myanmar’s recent history and the behavior of its generals one has to grasp the dynamic interaction (struggle even) between, on one hand, its external environment (milieu exterieur), including the disgruntled diaspora alongside the U.S. led international community, and on the other, the internal environment (milieu interieur) consisting of the generals’ ideological orientation in politics and economics which , the author argues, exceptionally , still draws from a well of adverse colonial experiences and betrayals, as well as from religion and culture. ‘Exceptionally’ because unlike other developing states Myanmar has been isolated from the international world for so long that those same internal factors have crystallized and come to take on a significance which, arguably,  exceeds the role played by history, culture and religion in other parts of the world."

How To Own Brilliant Ideas And Make Them Work

    in Lifestyle

Trying to be the source of all truths has become difficult in the 21st Century. Describing a good life, can be a red flag for ferrets who are intent on finding discrepances with their own view.  Even disclaimers are bushed aside, common sense being the most prominent one.

Being a good person is no guarantee of popularity.  Being popular is no guarantee of rightness.  One of the things the Craft does well, is confronting us with a need to live a factual life. Easier said than done I think.  While I enjoy the hellenistic philosophies, today positivism prevails. If you can't prove it, it doesn't work.  Freemasons must seem like lords-aleaping, as they plunge headlong into espousing faith in subscript philosophies.

Acts, no matter the good intention, can poison even the most solid relationships if the recipient does not welcome them. Rash, emotional judgement; rash comments are ingredients of conflicts.  Throughout history, chauvinism, being high minded  has been toxic. Enter the man who has reached an age of balance; old enough to develop his own thoughts, yet young enough that they  are relevent. Who will attempt the impossible- control of his emotion- silence when he does not know what to say.

As I age and begin repeating stories of glory days, don't mock nor pity me (too much).  The journey is always far more interesting than the destination.  Now how can you possibly say that isn't a fact.  It doesn't change ability, but it does let us enhance the abilities we have by hard work, listening, paying attention and keeping quiet as we go about our business.  Audi, Vide, Tace

Of course I need your advice on this. Join us as Masonic Companion talks about collecting ideas.

    Correct Interpretation of D&C 43

    in Religion

The Revelations of Jesus Christ; Section 2
21  And when I the Lord God did speak unto my servant Joseph Smith, that it should be that no one should be appointed to receive Revelations and Commandments excepting my servant Joseph, I the Lord God did provide that he should abide in me, and that as long as he should abide in me, saith the Lord, then it was that he should be the one empowered to speak in my name, as moved upon by the Holy Ghost. 22  And my servant Joseph, saith the Lord, did abide in me, even unto the end. 23  And how much greater, saith the Lord, is my servant Joseph in mine eyes than those whom ye sustain to be your presidencies? 25  And if it should be that the Presidencies of my church, saith the Lord, should fall into transgression, then they also, shall not have power to speak in my name, for the welfare and benefit of my Saints, or the members which comprise my Church, saith the Lord.
What is an appropriate response to Critics of Prophecy?   "Does the critic have a legitimate and unbiased reason for criticism?" should be the test his criticism should pass.    "Other reasons also may be added to explain why individuals engage in religious criticism. Some may criticize because their stated personal views are endangered; they may, perhaps, be publicly committed to a certain doctrinal position and feel that outspoken criticism against new evidence is the way to "save face." Some may criticize because of a personal animosity for, or distrust of, the teachings of others. Others may challenge religious teachings because they regard them as contrary to the precepts of their particular faith and they are seeking to "shelter their flocks.'" Duane Crowther; Thus Saith the Lord, p.218.

    Exploration of The Future:

    in Lifestyle

We are about to reach an interesting date in the development of freemasonry- St Johns Day 2017 marks 300 years since the declaration of a structured freemasonic organization.
On that date, we can pause and reflect on things that connect us to events out-of-mind. Each dedicated freemason, whether accomplished apprentice, student of the arts & sciences or a man whose feels he is more than himself.
Candidly, we know the goal of enlightenment has flickered. With rare exception, creating an atmosphere of learning and contemplation is a task that as yet, lies before us. The compression of history makes it seem freemasonry has been a steady association of brilliant thinkers as if they are our contempories. Some of us are lulled into a belief that freemasonry is a 6th Estate; an influence of determinance.  Our strength is influence of thought, decision, conscience and expression.  When you read a newspaper, I doubt your mind travels off the page to the historic processes that brought about 'freedom of the press?'  As we should be, we live in the moment. If 'masonic' values do exist, they exist in our minds made tangible by our actions.
300 years of history has seemingly made us sheepish about the notion of Great Ideas.  If James Anderson, Elias Ashmole or Christopher Wren were amongst us today, I dare say they were been suffocated in a faceless masonic bureacracy that did not exist in their day.
As we prepare our thoughts for 2017, we continue to adapt, strenghtened by a natural curiousity.  When we look up from our work bench to share findings we owe it to ourselves and our Antients to do so with dignity, sophistication and humiliation. Whether we see it or not, the truth is within us. Freemasonry is the laboratory- let alchemy help you explore the mysteries- for goodness sake.  I need your advice once again- join me.
