Vallejo Runs Amuck Over MMJ and the MCLR Legalization Initiative Strikes Again

    in News

The Marijuana Control, Legalization and Revenue Act (MCLR) is one of at least five initiatives to legalize marijuana being drafted for the California’s Nov. 2016 ballot. On July 13th MCLR submitted an updated version to the California AG’s office which included the public input gathered since the last filing along with comments from CalNORML and information gathered from Gavin Newsom’s Blue Ribbon Commission.

John Lee from Americans for Policy Reform (AFPR), the group behind the MCLR 2016 Initiative, will discuss the new language, explain how this initiative differs from the others and reveal their program to qualify for the Nov. 2016 ballot.

An on-again, off-again dispensing ordinance, the city refusing tax payments from medical marijuana dispensaries required by a voter approved initiative and spending up to a million dollars to close existing tax paying dispensaries is just part of the conundrum roiling the small desert town of Vallejo California.

The show’s second guest is attorney James Anthony who represents a consortium of the affected Vallejo dispensaries. Attorney Anthony provides an insider’s look at what is going on, why it is going on and what is being done to protect patient access as local elected officials egged on by local law enforcement, run amuck.

Managing Madrid Podcast 2015-16 Season, Episode 1

    in Soccer

We're baaaaaaack! Gabe Lezra and Josh Zeitlin are back with the first episode of the 2015-2016 Managing Madrid podcast season. Real Madrid made some moves during the offseason--though not as many as some would have liked. The guys are here to chat coaching changes--really, Rafa Benítez?! ¯\_(?)_/¯ --player acquisitions (from Asensio and Vallejo to Kovacic and Danilo and even style changes. They're both worried about the direction the club is headed, though they are optimistic about some of the acquisitions. Listen on to find out exactly how they feel about certain aspects of Real Madrid's circumstances.

The guys then transition, chatting about Madrid's disappotinting 0-0 draw to open the season against Sporting Gijón. What went wrong for los blancos? Is this just an anomalous result? Or is it the beginning of a worrying tred for Rafa Benítez (ugh ¯\_(?)_/¯) and company? And what exactly is going on with the offense?

We apologize for the timing of the show--ideally we would have gotten it up earlier, but we've had some technical issues. Additionally, we're sorry for not being around this summer--Gabe took the New York State Bar Exam, the qualifying test for becoming an attorney in New York, and Josh applied for and was accepted into Medical school. So yeah, not the easiest couple months. On the bright side, this is the first of a two-part Managing Madrid Podcast, and in the second part we'll talk David De Gea, Madrid's crushing victory over Betis, and the magic of James Rodriguez.

MARK PROCT Home Today Gone Tomorrow!

    in Pop Culture

When it comes to the music business, Mark Proct is a lifer. He’s not a star, but he is one of those people essential to stars a journeyman working behind the scenes who helps to make what happens onstage under the lights possible. A music industry professional in Austin, TX since 1975, Proct has labored in an array of showbiz infrastructure jobs, from driving tour buses to running sound, running his own lighting company and tour coach businesses and working as an artists’ manager. In the process, he not only helped further the careers of employers and clients, he played a pivotal role in the growth of Austin into a world-renowned hub for music and musical creativity. In those roles, and others, Proct has been present at pivotal moments in the careers of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the arc angels, Storyville, Vallejo, and others. A tireless amateur photographer, Proct was seldom without his camera, even as the music business took him and his musical compadres across the country and around the world. Now, after a lifetime of being behind the scenes, Proct is stepping out as the author of Home Today, Gone Tomorrow, a collection of rare, behind-the-scenes candid moments captured, as it were, on the run. These are not the glamor shots of carefully posed, manicured stars. Rather they are moments captured—backstage, in hotels, in recording studios, on city streets, behind the scenes.  It’s Proct’s gift that he was not only present in the moment, but had the presence of mind to capture it for the rest of us. Home Today, Gone Tomorrow not only catches musicians at pivotal moments in their lives, it also tells a larger story of the city of Austin, and its transformation from a sleepy college town to an international hub for music.
