USS Frank E. Evans DD754 Memorial Program
GUEST HOST: PAUL SHERBO, Author
Unsinkable Sailors: The fall and rise of the last crew of USS Frank E. Evans
Paul Sherbo will be joining us as our Guest Host to commemorate the forty-fifth anniversary of the June 3, 1969 sinking of the USS Frank E. Evans a United States Navy destroyer, struck by the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne.
Operating as part of a combined force with the Royal Australian Navy and other allied naval ships, the Evans executed a starboard turn into the path of Melbourne at 0315 a.m. on June 3, 1969 and was cut in half by the heavier and larger war ship. Evans’ broken off bow section sank almost immediately taking 73 unfortunate crewmembers with it. Only one body was recovered in the aftermath of the collision, bringing the total lost to 74. Out of the 273 crewmembers on board, 199 survived.
The stern section, although severely damaged, remained afloat. The courage and heroic spirit of both ships' crews add a genuine admiration for their bravery despite their confusion in the sudden turn of events.
We’ll be talking with former crew members who will provide updates on the groups activities and the drive by the USS Frank E. Evans DD754 Association members to have the ‘Lost 74” names added to the Vietnam Memorial Wall.

EVANGEL PACIFIC RADIO PRESENTS...This Special Broadcast.
Pastor Will Griffith is joined by R&B Legend and contemporary peacemaker Timmy Thomas, along with his management team, Steve Tucker and Frank Levy. This is an EPR Exclusive interview on the eve of the launch of Thomas' WE CAN LIVE TOGETHER World Peace Campaign.
In 1972, Timmy Thomas was watching the evening news hosted by Walter Cronkite. Mr. Cronkite was reporting on the Vietnam war, and the thousands of American and Viet Cong soldiers that had died in battle. Timmy thought "Why Can't We Live Together". This thought became a song that was embraced by millions.
The song was initially banned in South Africa during Apartheid, yet it became their national anthem at Nelson Mandela's inauguration, where Timmy performed live in front of 200,000 people.
Timmy has had other hits world wide, as well as having his songs placed in movies such as Boys Don't Cry, C.R.A.Z.Y., Dick, Radio, and Bachelor Party. Over 100 artists including Sade, Steve Winwood, Santana, and Joan Osborne have covered "Why Can't We Live Together".
Timmy has always lived his life for peace and love, from marching peacefully with Dr. Martin Luther King, to traveling to Haiti as an airline ambassador setting up safe houses for children that have been human trafficking victims.
Innocent children are being killed by war, in the streets, and in our schools. Peace is needed now more than ever! So, he is reaching out to renowned artists in the epic remake "Why Can't We Live Together",

Murray, UT – In June 2008, dual legislation passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate designated September as Gospel Music Heritage Month. In recognition of Gospel Music Heritage Month, Close-Up Talk Radio will spotlight Mama’s Temple Church Choir of Utah.
Mama's Temple Church Choir is a Pentecostal gospel choir led by Minister of Music Rosalind E. Cazares. Named for Rosalind’s mother Dr. Rosemary Redmon Cosby, affectionately known as “Mama,” the choir has since become one of the most renowned in the country, bringing its unique traditional gospel music to countless venues throughout the state of Utah for over 30 years.
“I learned how to find God to get the spirit into the song from my mother,” says Rosalind. “When you sing, you have to sanctify yourself. They’re not Gospel songs until you can feel the spirit of God when you’re singing.”
Rosalind says the choir is dedicated to keeping Mama’s legacy alive by using the communal spirit of gospel music to reinforce a belief in God and sing His praise. Each show is unique, with the choir offering an extensive repertoire of songs including everything from “Amazing Grace” to “Two Wings” to “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. The choir can even perform songs by audience request.
Rosalind says that at its very best, gospel music can be our salvation.
“When I sing these songs it fills my spirit. I feel God, so of course you’ve got to get that shout in,” laughs Cazares. “It’s a really, really good feeling to hear the sound of all these voices singing His praise together. God can hear us.”
Mama’s Temple Church Choir is scheduled to perform The World Stage in West Valley City on Monday, August 25 as part of the Utah Cultural Celebration Center’s Summer Concert Series.
