Ms Leona Brady Watson, Legendary Cariso Master

    in Culture

TRIBUTE TO LEONA BRADY WATSON -- HON. VICTOR O. FRAZER (Extension of Remarks - August 1, 1996) [Page: E1424] --- HON. VICTOR O. FRAZER in the House of Representatives, Wednesday, July 31, 1996

"Mr. Speaker, Leona Brady Watson was born on the island of St. Croix. At the tender age of 3, she began her education, which involved walking from Estate Two Friends to Frederikdsted where she attended St. Patrick's School. After finishing the third grade, she journeyed to the United States, and completed her formal education there."

"Upon returning to St. Croix in the late 50's, Mrs. Watson came home with a special yearning for her culture. She spent many years learning about what was a dying art in the Virgin Islands, the art of cariso, from the elders, particularly the ones on the north side of the island and the Frederiksted area. Leona was able to attain and maintain our delicate culture through their stories, soups, and music of days gone by. Leona continues to be honored by various cultural organizations as a tradition bearer for her untiring contribution to the cultural growth of the Virgin Islands, and the knowledge of the history of our beloved homeland."

"Some of Leona's famed works include: Quoted in 3 published books; actress in the film, The Story of Cariso, nationally acclaimed; performance in numerous stage shows, on island and abroad; participated in the 24th Annual Festival of American Folklife, the Virgin Islands; program sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and the Virgin Islands."

"Leona is also a highly respected herbologist who has been asked most recently to participate in cultural exchange between Africa (Senegal), China and Switzerland."

  • Carnival Royalty in the Virgin Islands

    in Culture

St. Croix hosts its Carnival between Christmas and Three Kings Day. The Crucian Christmas Carnival (formerly called Festival) sees events in both Christiansted and Frederiksted including calypso shows, Latin music venues, food fairs, horse races, parades, and the village.

Who is the royalty representing St. Croix this year? Who were the past royalties of the Virgin Islands? Why is there royalty in the Carnivals of the Virgin Islands? How and when did it come about? What is its history? Was it celebrated in the days of the Danish West Indies?

Do you know the answer to any of these questions? Call in at 347-237-4374 and share your comments or ask your questions. The Doctor may know the answers but loves interacting with you, the listeners!

  • Zenzi Hodge, The Never Snowy Christmas

    in Writing

If you asked Zenzi Hodge what she wanted to be when she grew up, you would not have heard the word author; however, that is what she has been for most of her life, whether she wants to admit it or not. Zenzi, the daughter of teachers, has been writing most of her life, something she's done since she wrote her first poem about living on St. Thomas, published in a children's anthology when she was in elementary school. Her love for creative expression continued but she purely wrote poems for fun not, as she would say, for public consumption. In 2007, Zenzi began writing short stories for her son to share his family history with him. But her passion for writing for young children came in 2011 after she lost her grandfather & she took the words her son used to express his sadness to write a story titled, I Can't See the Morning.

While the character in The Never Snowy Christmas is inspired by her son, much of the antics are of her own imagining as she STILL wishes for snow on St. Thomas.  Zenzi is an alumna of Florida A&M and Clark Atlanta Universities and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.  She resides on St. Thomas with her husband and son.

Will it snow in St. Thomas?  That is the hope of a young boy living in the US Virgin Islands.  Each year at Christmas, he wishes for snow in the island paradise he calls home and this Christmas he intends to get it.  Join him on his quest and find out if this will be the year that he gets snow in St. Thomas or will he continue to ask, "Where's My Snow" for another holiday season.

Deepertruth: Join Us As We Meet The Virgin Mary In Venezuela at 8:00 P.M.

    in Religion

In 1976 the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary was reported. In 1984 she appeared to over 100 people at the grotto in Betania and soon afterwards the local bishop, Pio Bello Ricardo (shown in photo on the right) opened an investigation.  After a 3-year investigation he gave his approval for the apparitions in 1987, declaring that they were authentic, supernatural and of divine nature. He recommended Betania as a place of pilgrimage. you could often find him among the crowds during one of the Feast Days outlined below.

Another unique experience that occasionally took place was the red rose that miraculously came out of her chest. This was an incredibly painful experience for Maria Esperanza and was witnessed by doctors, priests and lay people alike.
