The Center for Urban Biblical Ministry has been educating adults in the Pittsburgh area in partnership with Geneva College since 1988. Since 1998, Karla Byrd has been the CUBM director, guiding the program through rough waters to calm seas. She has also been instrumental in founding the Pittsburgh Urban Heroes Program, and was recognized as an urban hero herself. Today John Stanko, the show's co-host, interviews Karla to talk about life, CUBM, what it takes to be an urban hero and the state of CUBM and adult education in general in the 21st century.
Hellooooo, my name is London Ellis and I am singer/songwriter from London chasing my dreams with my big stubborn personality toget my music heard and to make other people happy with it. I have always wanted to be a singer. You know when you are asked in school what you wanna be when you grow up? Well mine wasn’t the astronaut, (even though the thought of jumping around on the moon does sound fun), not the Princess, (even though having a prince whisk me off my feet wouldn’t be such a terrible thing, damn maybe I should re-think this…) but anyway I said “I’m gonna be a Popstar” and I have never changed my mind since.
TOPIC: TAKING CARE OF OUR PARENTS. HOW DO WE REMAIN THEIR KIDS WHEN WE ARE THEIR ADULT CAREGIVERS? WHO HAS SAY? Call in and share your experience with taking care of your parents. Have you prepared for this mentally? Physically? Emotionally? But most of all FINANCIALLY? When one parent is left living after the other has passed what do you have in place? How do you let your father or mother stay independent? We will discuss these questions in depth. Your input is necessary!

Where does our outrage meet the challenge of change?
“Sankofa” teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. Whatever we have lost, forgotten, forgone, or been stripped of can be reclaimed, revived, preserved, and perpetuated.

This week on Scottscope Talk Radio, we’ll be diving headlong into Marvel’s upcoming Secret Wars Event! Will this be the end of the Marvel Universe as we know it? Will this reboot create greater fidelity between the Marvel Comics Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Does it bear comparison to DC comics Crisis on Infinite Earths? Is this merely a calculated move to boost sales? Have reboots become something of a safety net for both Marvel and DC? What good, if any, could possibly come from this?
We’ll also be talking about the historical epic Selma. Was it snubbed at the Oscar nominations? If so, why was it snubbed? Does the answer boil simply boil down to good old fashioned racism, or is there something else afoot? Is Spike Lee right about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? Should Black Americans simply dismiss and disregard the Oscars? Are the Oscars even still relevant? What does this mean for future Black biopics and historical dramas looking to get recognition from the Academy?
We’ll also be discussing the ongoing controversy with Clint Eastwood’s latest, American Sniper! Is Chris Kyle a true American hero, or a raging sociopath that is now being deified by Hollywood? Can the film be dismissed as merely jingoistic right-wing propaganda? How accurate is the film in its portrayal of Chris Kyle? Why has the Motion Picture Academy, which is largely seen as a liberal institution, nominated it for multiple Oscars? Should historical accuracy be a prerequisite for biopics?
