Military Monday Veterans Day Special with USNI Press Author/Poet Victoria Kelly

    in Military

As we prepare to celebrate Veterans Day, it is important to remember that our service personnel through the decades, did not undergo their military service alone. From the first muster of the Minutemen in April 1775, until the present day, our servicemen and women frequently have waiting for them at home, family, spouses, and loved ones. Today however, military spouses and loved ones undergo their own unique experiences as they remain home, while their soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines go off to the other side of the world, and often into war.

But just how happens to a military wife when, "the men go off to war?" While there have been a handful of books on the subject over the past several decades, there is a greater question to be asked. Just what does it feel like to send "your other half" off to an uncertain duty in a foreign land? Especially one that could potentially force they and their families to pay "their last full measure" to America? Often sentences and paragraphs in books something do not convey the feelings of military spouses, which is why we will turn to poetry this week.

To learn more about the poetry and thoughts of contemporary militiary wives, tune into this week's special Veteran's Day edition of Military Monday (#MilitaryMonday on the Writestream Radio Network (@Writestream)) at 1 PM EST. Author, historian, journalist, documentary filmmaker, and host John D. Gresham (@greshamj01) has invited U.S. Naval Institute Press (@USNIBooks) author and poet Victoria Kelly (@vkellybooks) to discuss her new book of poetry, WHEN THE MEN GO OFF TO WAR. John will be joined bt Writestream Radio Network founder Daria DiGivanni (@Dariaanne) and Donna Lyons- McClellan (@Donnalyons), herself an author and military spouse.

    WIIM Radio: October 12

    in Hockey

We're back with another episode of WIIM Radio now that the season has started. We have me, Jeff, Graham, and Joe talking Red Wings hockey and Michelle dropping the prospects report for us. Here's a rundown of how things played out:

Dylan Larkin! - Jeff didn't want to wait to talk about the wunderkid so we led off espousing what makes the guy so special to the Wings and why we're all sporting massive Dylan Larkin banners.
Setting the Roster - Hopefully the second-to-last time we ever have to speak objectively about Dan Clearys use to the Red Wings on ice, we go over what it means for him to have been waived and refuse assignment, as well as some other rosterbatory discussion.
The Wings started off 2-0! - Breaking down the Toronto and Carolina games, we try to make excuses for why winning hockey games in which you get badly outshot isn't a portent of doom in early October and also congratulate some people on doing a good job.
Prospects Report - The Griffins started off 0-2 in California, but Michelle gives us a really good rundown on why that's not a bad thing, as well as player-by-player evals for the BAM line. Then she goes on to discuss how our non-AHL prospects are doing, including some really promising stuff about the future of Detroit's blue line.
Reader Questions - Did you ask a good question? We probably answered it! We were almost certainly polite about that too!

As always, WIIM Radio is rated R. Sailors don't think it's a big deal and they seem like pretty cool people.

Tiera Craig a veteran, entrepreneur, activist and community leader. Serving in the United States Army from 1995 to 2004, Tiera navigated through the Veterans Compensation Appeals process and after helping a few soldiers that were having issues with the process and the feeling that they could not openly talk about their issues of being gay to another VSA she began Rainbow Veterans Project.
The Rainbow Veterans Project aims to provide resource, advocacy, and training to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Veterans. We will ensure that LGBT veterans understand all benefits and entitlements due to them and their families. We will work with VA Medical Centers, Veterans Benefits Administration, Legal Aid organizations, Employment and Training organizations, and all other available resources to serve as the HUB for LGBT veterans and their families. We will also provide social outings and events to maintain and rebuild comradery among Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen in a safe and affirming environment. They model ourselves after successful Veterans' Service Organizations except we will cater to the unique needs of LGBT veterans in a Post-DADT society.

The Rainbow Veteran Project seeks to be recognized and utilized as the premier LGBT Veterans' Service Organization in the country. They want to ensure that we are able to provide all necessary services/resources to any veteran seeking assistance.

The 12 Devils Graveyards Worldwide- Vile Vortices -Paranormal Strange Activity

    in Spirituality

Join us for a conversation with experts on the Vile Vortices, including SA McNally and James Moses.

You’re probably familiar with the Bermuda Triangle, but did you know it has eleven siblings?

According to cryptozoologist and paranormal expert Ivan Sanderson (1911-1973), there are twelve spots on the globe that are areas where ships, planes or people go missing for unexplained reasons.  He called these navigational hazards the Vile Vortices.

Sanderson’s “Bermuda Triangle” is more of a trapezoid, but it’s still the best known spot for mysterious ship and plane disappearances.  Oddly enough, despite its reputation, there are only a handful of actual known disappearances in the triangle.  The most well known is Flight 19, a military training flight.  Fourteen airmen vanished, and the search squadron sent to look for them also vanished, claiming an additional thirteen airmen.  Flight 19 is well known in part because it was featured prominently in Stephen Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Although the Bermuda Triangle is better known in the Western world, the Devil’s Sea (also called the Taiwan Triangle) south of Japan is also a source of missing ships and planes, and appears on Sanderson’s map (upper left corner, difficult to make out).  The Devil’s Sea has long been known to Asian sailors, and according to some reports, shortly after World War II the Japanese fleet lost several ships in the area prompting the government to declare the region unsafe for travel.
