  • Author talk, giveaways w/Aline Ohanesian, Patricia Park & Kirstin Valdez Quade

    in Books

You have until Friday, May 8, to enter to win the books featured on this episode of the Literary New England Radio Show, where we feature:

Aline Ohanesian on Orhan's Inheritance, a novel that shifts between the last years of the Ottoman Empire and 1990s Los Angeles. It tells the story a young Turkish man who leaves his family's small village, to travel to the US, to discover why his recently deceased grandfather bequeathed the family home to a woman his family has never heard of--a woman who lives in a facility for elderly Aremians. It's a novel that brings a neglected time in Turkish history to life, spanning decades, honoring the resilience of the human spirit and illustrating the depth of love.
Patricia Park on Re: Jane, a Korean-American retelling of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, set in Manhattan and Seoul. Its protagonist, Jane, is a an orphan trying to escape from Flushing, NY, where she works in her strict uncle’s grocery store before becoming the au pair, beginning an affair with the father of the children she cares for and then fleeing to Seoul. There, she reconnects with family and works to accept who she really is.
Kirstin Valdez Quade on her short story collection Night at the Fiestas. Set in northern New Mexico, the 10 stories plunge into the fierce, troubled hearts of characters defined by the desire to escape the past or else plumb into its depths: A deadbeat father of a pregnant teen who tries to transform his life by playing the role of Jesus; a young man who discovers that his estranged father and a boa constrictor have been squatting in his grandmother’s empty house; a lonely retiree who becomes obsessed with her housekeeper; and others.

Hosted by Cindy Wolfe Boynton. Visit the Literary New England blog for added book giveaways, author talk, articles and more!

Racism In Milwaukee? - Black People Need To Step Up

    in Politics Conservative

    Two Bucks

The story of Two Bucks, an East Side Bar in Milwaukee, may never recovery from an insedent that happened over the weekend.  Black patrons, for no reaon were asked to leave the bar by the owner.  Subsequently many of the employees quit and are now calling for a boycott of the bar.  There are two situations with this story that I find interesting.  We will discuss it and take your calls on this morning.

    The Milwaukee River Development Paln

Currently there are 4 developers competing to develop the downtown site on the Milwaukee river.  Court proceedings and law suites are already under way.  One must wonder what kind of deals are being made and of course what officials are participating in Quid pro quo.

I looked at this story and wondered something rather strange.  Is Common Core causing Blacks and people in poverty to be left out of opportunites.  Sure you may wonder why I am going in this direction but take a listen to the show and you will see why.

Will Hillary Clinton Be Our Next President?

African-Americans really need to look closesly at the facts. Our inner cities that are failing are a direct result of Liberal politics.  In essence this is the new slavery and we keep voting for it.

There have been no Democratic candidates that are a serious threat to Hillary Clinton step forward.  It really makes me wonder why her scandal ridden past seems to be a non-issue to them.  Benghazi, Quid pro quo deals, as well as distancing herself from her husbands crime bill issues are enough to really make one pause.  At least they should, but some how this woman has been able to get around all of this.  She has not and most likely will not sit down and do a long interview without knowing all of the questions in advance.

Manifest Justice: The Impact of Socially Conscience Art.

    in Culture

There is nothing like being emotionally moved by a piece of art. Whether it be a painting, sculpture, or some other form of creativity; the overall impression can be lasting and coerce us to rethink how we view ourselves and the world around us.

Manifest Justice is a large-scale pop-up art exhibition, cultural convening, and community organizing event taking place in the Baldwin Hills area of South Los Angeles. Unlike other civil rights exhibits that highlight events from the 60's, Manifest Justice is hauntingly current. Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and Oscar Grant are but a few of the many victims who have been immortalized through the works of over 150 artists.

Tonight I will be joined by Nijeul Xavier Porter, a young man who is instrumental to the success of the event; and Gabriel Garcia Roman, an artist who has works on display at the event. Both will share why the event is important -especially in today's social climate-and what it means to be a part of the experience.
