On March 31, 1929 seventy seven men began an epic 3,554 mile footrace from New York to Los Angeles punishing their bodies an average of 46 miles for 78 days over mostly unpaved roads in hopes of winning $25,000 in prize money. The 1929 Bunion Derby is considered the most grueling ultra-marathon of all time.
The event promoter Charlie Pyle put together a traveling Vaudeville show in hopes of raising the prize money, complete with dancing debutants, an all-girl band wearing pilot outfits and black faced comedians. This is an amazing tale told by the author Charles B. Kastner.
An interview with Ultra Marathon Champion Scott Jurek, 7 time winner of the Western States 100 miler, author of the best seller, Eat & Run. Nicknamed El Venado (the Deer) Scott is arguably the greatest American Ultra Marathoner in history. Scott’s fame grew outside the typical trail running circles due to popularity of Christopher McDougal’s Best Seller “Born to Run”, in which Scott participated in the race through the Copper Canyons’ with the legendary Tarahumara Indians of Mexico.
8 year old Teagen Redden and her 11 year old brother Tajh are both accomplished Ultra-Marathon Runners. Is it even safe to allow/encourage a child that young to run that far? Listen as we interview their parents and a medical professional!
We thought it only fair to allow both parents to share their view on allowing their young children to brave these 100 mile ultra-trail runs. We also invited an unbiased, seasoned runner/Pediatrician to join us to get comments from a medical professional. This is a very controversial topic on parenting as runners.
The Ultra Marathon Man, Dean Karnazes shares his thoughts with our host Richard Diaz. Dean is an ESPN ESPY Award winner as Best Outdoor Athlete and author of Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner, a fun interview with an amazing athlete.
In 2006, Karnazes embarked on the well-publicized Endurance 50: 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days. Beginning with the Lewis and Clark Marathon in St. Louis on September 17, 2006, it finished with the New York City Marathon on November 5.
The adventure was the primary subject of a film entitled UltraMarathon Man: 50 Marathons - 50 States - 50 Days, which was the first feature film about Karnazes. The film was produced by Journeyfilm, had a national theatrical release in 300 screens in 2008.
For his 12th birthday Colby Wentlandt asked his parents for a marathon. Since then he's run two 50 mile races, a 50k and three 100 mile races. He has yet to celebrate his 13th birthday. We visit with Colby and his mother to talk about what he's learned, how he trains, what his doctor says, the feedback they get from other runners and medical personnel, things he does for fun and what he's thinking about in the future. It's a fascinating look at a remarkable runner who happens to be 12 years old.

Good morning and welcome to Get Healthy Now with Denise Thomson, Founder and CEO of Miclknight. I am an Educator, Author, Speaker and passionate about healthy and balanced living.
Why is Physical Balance so important?
ex.: Jr.'s story from when we took him in (November 11, 2009, prior 2 years convalescent home after amputation of left leg) to when he passed away (September 21, 2015 at 92 years and exactly 8 months) 6 years of learning, challenges, solutions, (vegetable, reduced meds with Dr.'s knowledge, interacted with him, healthier nutrition, better hydration, started swimming after 5 months living with us, increased swimming to 1 mile a day, sometimes 2 miles!)
ex.: my story November 5, 2015
What does Physical Balance prevent? What are the benefits? How can we achieve them?
No marathon needed! Consistent, daily exercise makes a big difference, not just physically, also emotionally, spiritually and what we'll see next week, mentally. Even passive exercising is better than no exercising.
Until next week! Stay happy, healthy, balanced and empowered!
