  • SPECIAL REPORT: Hip Hop and Race - A NY Hip Hop Report Talk Show Town Hall

    in Music

Hip hop music and culture were born due to an incredibly unique real-world atmosphere, and since its inception, has always documented real life issues, often serving as a raw, unfiltered look at urban America through the eyes of those with a perspective like few others. Once dubbed the "CNN of the streets," hip hop has suffered something of an imposed identity crisis in recent years, being forced into a formulaic box by profit-seeking media conglomerates, seemingly more eager to produce cookie cutter music and prop up a certain sub-genre of rap superstar, at the expense of the huge range that exists in the overall music and culture.

As always, New York plays a huge part of this issue, but while NYC is still the Mecca, the issues facing hip hop that deal with race, have become a national -- even international -- issue worth discussing on its own. Add to this, the current turbulent relations between many Americans and the institutions supposedly designed "to serve and protect" them, based largely on the unequal treatment served to certain segments of the population.

In this special episode of The NY Hip Hop Report, we'll discuss both of these intriguing landscapes, both individually and how they coincide. Well discuss instances of real and perceived "cultural misappropriation" in the hip hop music business, how the industry muscled out pro-Black and "conscious" hip hop music over the years, as well as how current hip hop artists and organizations are at the forefront of the new civil rights movement, yet, rarely receive recognition or assistance, even from hip hop's most powerful figures.

If there is any episode that we need your input, it's this one. We'll be taking calls all night from listeners and a couple of special call-in guests. Join us, and join the conversation!

    Project Empowerment - Marc Bekoff

    in Self Help

Project Empowerment is honored to have on author and Professor Marc Bekoff.  He is professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder.  He has worked alongside leading writers and activists including Jane Goodall, Peter Singer, and PETA cofounder Ingrid Newkirk.

We’ll be discussing his new book Rewilding Our Hearts: Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexistence.

In wildlife conservation work, rewilding refers to habitat restoration and the creation of corridors between preserved lands to allow declining populations to rebound.  Marc Bekoff, one of the world’s most engaging animal experts and activists, here applies rewilding to human attitudes.  He argues that unless we rewild ourselves, becoming profoundly reconnected to nature and fundamentally shifting our consciousness, our conversation efforts will have but limited impact.

Please join us as we’ll be discussing this a so much more.  You can learn more about his work at www.literati.net/authors/marc-bekoff

Yezidis - An Ancient People Under Siege

    in Culture

In this episode of Hindu Radio I interview Gulie Khalaf. She is an American Yezidi schoolteacher and leading Yezidi activist from Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. After her people in Iraq became the focus of the Islamist terror group ISIL she rose up to the occasion. Gulie recently went back to Iraq to assist her people languising in refugee camps.

Until this year most people had never heard of the Yezidi. Suddenly as the terrorist group ISIL began massacring and kidnapping their people the world moved into action. US President Obama ordered the US Airforce into action. Yet after some intitial efforts the Yezidi were once again forgotten. As they were buthchered and chased out of town after town the Yezidis were forced to take shelter in their ancient stronghold of Holy Mt Shingal. For months they battled repeated attemtps by ISIL to storm the mountain. Many Yezidi martyrs gave their lives in this effort. Only in the past week were the terrorists forced back from the mountain.

During this crisis the Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar also visited Iraq and organized a peace conference and gave a speech at the Kurdish Parliament. Meanwhile the Hindu community united with the Yezidis and has raised thousands of dollars on behalf of the Yezidi people of Iraq.

Now long term efforts must be developed to rehabilate the Yezidis and recover their ancient homelands.

Military Monday with John D. Gresham and Journalist Donna Lyons

    in Military

2014 has been a rough year for military personnel and members of the veterans community. The year began with a budget crisis, following a government shutdown and over five years without a signed and approved Federal Budget. And while some sense of fiscal responsibility seems to have finally come to the White House and Congress, things for those who still serve, and have served, continue to go from bad to worse. Forced drawdowns of active-duty military personnel continue, despite escalations of enemy action in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. The Department of Veterans Affairs, despite the firing of its top leadership and years of saying that they are, "working the problems," in fact was proven in 2014 to be a criminally corrupt and morally bankrupt organization totally failing in their chartered mission. And as if to punctuate the continuing downward spiral for individuals who serve and have served, service/veterans benefits continue to be eroded in the Fiscal Year 2015 budget, which offers only a paltry 1% pay increase to those who go into harms way for America.

To get a better sense of just what military personnel and veterans will be facing in the coming year, join military historian, author and journalist John D. Gresham (@Greshamj01) for Military Monday at 1 p.m. Eastern. His guest co-host this week will be journalist Donna Lyons. Herself a military/veterans spouse, Ms. Lyons writes extensively about the service/veterans community, and has her own intriguing observations regarding their present day experiences and service. Callers are encouraged to call in and offer questions and opinions to Mr. Gresham and Ms. Lyons, in an hour that we are dedicating to those who serve, those who have served, and those who will serve. Please join us.
