This month on TechSource and High Tech Highway, we are delving into telehealth and specifically how technologies are enabling the distribution of more effective healthcare solutions regardless of geographic boundaries.
This is of particular importance when considering military health services that are trying to reach personnel and vets across the globe. Commercial healthcare providers are following a similar path to provide better care for patients.
Today we are talking with Josh Finke, Managing Director of Iron Bow Consulting and Ryan Sobel, Director of Enterprise Mobility at Iron Bow Consulting, about these issues and the role technology plays in delivering care.

"Being in a ship is like being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned" – Samuel Johnson
For hundreds of years, the keeping of order and discipline aboard naval vessels was based around a delicate balance of privileges and punishment. Privileges included the daily distribution of alcoholic beverages such as grog (a mix of rum and water), while punishment included confinement (in prison barges or shackles aboard ship) and/or flogging. Given that life aboard a sailing ship was itself a form of confinement and imprisonment, the traditional means of maintaining discipline proved adequate during the Age of Fighting Sail. But the coming of the 19th century, and with it the revolutionary power of steam engines, completely change the character and demographic of enlisted sailors in the navies worldwide. Aboard the fighting ships of the U.S. Navy there were still rough men who performed primarily physical skills, but added to this were the first of a wave of technicians and mechanics. Nevertheless, these sailors still drank too much, fought and brawled, and periodically deserted their posts. It was for these men, the naval discipline afloat continued to be enforced.
And as the U.S. Navy expanded and contracted between 1850 in the 1930s, discipline afloat and punishment ashore also evolved. The first large U.S. Navy prisons were constructed, including the facility at the Portsmouth Naval Yard in New Hampshire, the largest such facility of its time. To learn more about the evolution and enforcement of discipline and punishment in the U.S. Navy between 1850 in the 1930s, join military historian, author and journalist John D. Ray Hcame to America in the late 1960s from Cairo, Egypt, with his family. As Coptic Christians, they were a minority in Egypt where Sharia law is written into the constitution, and where Islam rules. Their only hope of freedom of religion and escaping religious persecution was to come to America.
Ray knows how precious Freedom is. He cherishes his Freedom. He has never, ever taken, for granted, his right to vote. He knows all too well that in the Middle East, “democracy” is defined as: one man, one vote, one time.
One defining moment for Ray’s family came in 1996 when both Easter and the Muslims’ Ramadan coincided on the calendar. In celebration, the Egyptian government issued pickled fish to everyone. However, the Christians only were given fish that was tainted, contaminated. Ray saw 3 family members die and 27 become hospitalized.
Sept. 11, 2001 was the tipping point for Ray. That’s when Ray knew that Islamic jihad had come to America. Searching for an organization to join, none were to be found until 2008 when he joined ACT! for America, the largest national security grassroots movement in the U.S. that today has over 200,000 members and more than 800 chapters. Ray has been serving as the Boston Chapter leader ever since.
