Mark Harris -- Collage, photography and printmaking
Mark Hosts his SF Open Studios on two weekends -- Oct. 18 and 19 as well as on Oct. 25 and 26
Mark Harris makes exceptional use of color in his paintings. He has a keen eye and the ability to create strong, beautiful, contemporary images. Mark has exhibited at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, CA, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art in Novato, CA, and the California Modern Gallery in San Francisco, CA, just to name a few. The University of Chile purchased a painting for the school of Agriculture and became the first institutional collector of Harris’ work.
Ron Moultrie Saunders -- Photography
Ron Moultrie Saunders creates photograms: photographs that are made without the use of a camera. This 19th Century process has an immediacy, rawness and truth that is not found in images created with a camera. Ron layers natural and man-made elements such as water, plants and rope on the surface of silver-based photographic paper. The paper is exposed to light from an enlarger to create a shadowy silhouette image. Then, Ron lays other images on top of the photo paper and makes another exposure, which results in a collage effect.
What if Christopher Columbus owed his success—maybe even his very life—to two brothers who have been almost completely forgotten in the annals of history?
Forgotten Brothers is the story of Martín and Vicente Pinzon, and their instrumental role in the eventual success of Christopher Columbus’ mission. Columbus invited Martin Pinzon to join the expedition, but the two men would eventually become bitter rivals. And while heartbreak was the fate for the Pinzons, Columbus returned a victor, and history regards him as a hero.
Based on many long-neglected historical treatises, some as many as 140 years old, this book presents a different picture of the facts of the voyage—facts today’s history books fail to reveal.
Gary Knight is a descendent of Spanish immigrants (on his mother’s side) and has heard from his Spanish cousins for years the story of the Pinzon brothers, highlighted in his historical novel Forgotten Brothers. For 10 years, Gary tutored English and writing to aspiring high school students and was an adjunct professor at a community college for 5 years, while he continues his book writing. He is a member of the American Independent Writers group and writes on-line book reviews for them.
Mr. Knight is a life-long sailor, has owned five boats on the Chesapeake Bay, and has participated in the Marion to Bermuda cruising race. He and his wife Brenda, who is a retired financial analyst for the Federal Reserve Board and a hypnotherapist, live on the water on the Chesapeake. Each has two grown daughters.
The War of Ideals, Religion, and blood on Prophecy Headline News at Noon
The War of Ideals, Religion, and blood on Prophecy Headline News at Noon. Years ago while in bible collage I started a nonprofit Evangelistic association. It came on the heels of our working the streets testifying to our faith and then beginning a coffee house ministry aimed at the youth. The locals were upset with us as the area was traditional Lutherans and others. They could not understand why we came to their town. But, the youth who came, gave their heart to the Lord and followed him in all earnest of faith. On Saturday nights the local bars and organizations would swell with the ranks of the religious, among them the deacons. On Sunday morning these same drunks and drinkers would swell the pews of the local churches.
They had faith alright, but it was one in opposition to ours. We were on the streets, believed in the saving of the soul. We believed that the experience of Christianity was the greatest event, but even more so is the Lord of the Christian. It was not shallow faith, but deep rooted faith that met all opposition. It was on fire, challenging, and persistent. It was that dynamic, faith of young people like us that moved in the call of God. In that calling, the Lord was faithful and young people got saved...read more by going to our original posts on our websites or listen to show

Thirty-four years ago a small group of community leaders met and decided that they needed an event to showcase the great fall fishing Southport-Oak Island area has to offer. The prizes and expenses for the first tournament were guaranteed by those community leaders signing a promissory note at a local financial institution - thus the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament was born. The U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament now attracts almost 400 boats annually and is held in high esteem by the community and anglers.
