Great Loop Radio: Documentary of a Great Loop Cruise done in 1906

    in Travel

Our guest will be Bob Reynolds, the grandson of boat builder Scott J. Matthews, who did the Great Loop in 1906. Bob provided photos and his grandfather's written account of the journey for a new documentary. Below is the info from a press release about the documentary, and a preview can be seen here: http://www.matthewsboatownersassoc.com/

"In 1890, Scott J. Matthews founded the Matthews Boat Company in Bascom, Ohio. Fifteen years later, in 1906, Matthews, designed and built a 70 foot yacht. This vessel was capable of taking himself, and family of four, plus two others, on a 9,000 mile trip.

The adventure, of almost one year, transversed the eastern half of the United States, which is now referred to as the "Great Loop". This trip was a "first" for a private yacht and its success resulted in moving the Matthews Company to Port Clinton in 1906.

This past year, in collaboration with the Maritime Museum of Sandusky, a documentary was made. It includes many of the original photos taken along the way. The narrative is based on the written account of Scott Matthews."

    Travel Today - Cairo Egypt

    in Travel

This week, Travel Today with Peter Greenberg from Cairo, Egypt. We’ve been broadcasting at least once every year from Egypt since 1998. Tourism numbers are down drastically in Egypt, but, as a veteran traveler to the region, Peter argues that this is perhaps the best time to go! You’ll find hardly anyone at the pyramids, and while more than 300 boats usually travel down the Nile in Luxor, this year only about six are operating. Joining Peter will be John Boulding, CEO of Insight Vacations to discuss why his boat, the Tosca, is running—as business is slowly starting to improve.

A few ambassadors also stop by to give their situation report on Cairo and the rest of the country. Then, we go on a quick detour to visit celebrity Chef John Besh to talk about another city that knows all too well about recovery: New Orleans (especially as we near the tenth anniversary of Katrina). All of this and more during this week’s episode of Travel Today with Peter Greenberg from Cairo, Egypt.

An Artist Speaks Season 4 Episode 4 with Guest Shannon Celia

    in Art

Hear this exclusive interview with artist Shannon Celia and host Michael Harris as they discuss her art, motivation and her artistic techniques.

Shannon has been painting professionally for about 8 years in oil and lately, she’s been concentrating on her favorite theme of seascapes and boats. Since she’s been doing this, Shannon has won four awards since January, which confirms her belief that we should follow our passions when creating. Shannon lives in the Conejo Valley of Southern California and is a member of various local art associations such as the juried Thousand Oaks Art Association, The Buenaventura Art Association and the Westlake Village Art Guild.

“My passion is painting contemporary seascapes created in oil, using palette knives with a focus on color, mood, texture and light. I believe that seeing the world through an artist's lens is a gift, so I celebrate by observing, contemplating and painting the subtle details!”

    Voices Carry for Animals #31

    in Current Events

    Hosted by Debbie Dahmer

Guest:  James Aspey- Animal Rights Activist 28 year old vegan, animal rights activist from Sydney, Australia. He became a Personal Trainer after winning his battle with cancer.

James helped others live healthier, more positive lives for 9 years. During that time he learned about the health benefits of cutting meat from his diet and went vegetarian. Soon later, after learning about the horrors of the egg and dairy industry, he became vegan for ethical reasons. James then took a 365 day vow of silence to raise awareness for animals and promote peace over violence, in his campaign, Voiceless365.

"As the clock struck midnight on January 1st, 2014, I commenced a vow of silence for 365 days. What this means is I voluntarily sacrificed my ability to speak for an entire year! Needless to say... It was a serious challenge!

I drove half way around Australia, volunteering at rescue farms, nursed a rescued bobby calf from nearly dying in my arms back to health, worked on the boats in protest of a shark cull, experienced the horror of factory farms with my own eyes, went to Bali to get tattoos representing animal rights and veganism, handed out hundreds of vegan advocacy DVD's and everywhere I go promoting compassion to ALL living beings while remaining entirely voiceless!

In the last quarter of my journey and cycled over 5000km's from Darwin to Sydney due to my not-so-trusty van breaking down in the middle of the Western Australian outback.

It was the adventure of a lifetime!
