Let's Coach! with Mark and Carolyn

    in Motivation

Let’s Coach with Mark and Carolyn, Wednesday, June 3, 2015, Noon EST

    Just Imagine

Just imagine – at risk young people with few prospects suddenly presented with the chance to go to camp.  That was Abby Sondak’s dream.  Working in Washington DC’s inner city public schools, she saw plenty of kids with limited opportunities.  Abby decided to do something about it.  She started her own non-profit to send kids to camp so that they could enjoy the same carefree and enjoyable summer fun that she experienced.  Starting with two campers in 2011, Abby decided to create her own non-profit, Just Imagine.  Her campers have flourished and the organization has grown.

Just Imagine was incorporated in 2012 with the goal of being able to provide as many wonderful D.C. Public and Charter school students with the summer experience of a lifetime. With the help from friends, family, camps and other supporters, nine students were able to attend sleep away camp that summer.  That grew to 14 camp scholarships for the summer of 2013 and 22 students with scholarships in 2014. This summer, 45 children will receive scholarships to camp.

Abby Sondak graduated from the University of Maryland in 2009, and began working for a non-profit organization called Playworks. During her time with Playworks, she worked in inner city public schools in Washington DC, creating a safe, inclusive environment for children to play with one another. Following her time with Playworks, she was hired as a PE Teacher at E.W. Stokes Public Charter School in NE DC. She completed a Masters in Elementary Education in May, and has recently been hired as the Development and Communications Manager at Stokes.

Join Mark and Carolyn, as we hear Abby’s inspiring story.  She’ll tell us how her desire to meet student’s dreams resulted in a non-profit that touches the lives of at risk kids.

Stranded Whale In Atlantic City, New Jersey Gets Graffitied

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A dead Minke whale that washed ashore in New Jersey suffered some further indignity: someone tagged it with graffiti.

The whale, which was roughly 12 to 15 feet long, was discovered Thursday morning below Atlantic City's Central Pier.

Police tell The Press of Atlantic City the purple markings are not gang-related and appear to be Greek letters.

The letters appeared to be Tau Epsilon Phi, a fraternity that has chapters at several area schools, followed by what looked like "94."

Spokesman Jesse Cohen says while it has not been confirmed that Tau Epsilon Phi members were involved, the fraternity considers it a "reprehensible act" contrary to its teachings and is cooperating with authorities.

A state pathologist will try to determine the cause of death.

Jason Hayes: Drama Teacher & Coach

    in Entertainment

Jason Hayes joins the show tonight to talk about their GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds to take students in their program to the UK this summer to perform!

Call 323 657-1493 to ask questions or join in the fun!

Jason is the Director of Theatre and Lead Teacher for Arts, Media and Entertainment at James Monroe High School in North Hills, a suburb of Los Angeles. With productions that include, Oedipus the King, Wiley and the Hairy Man, Zombie Prom and School House Rock Live! along with on campus festivals that include Comedia Del Arte, Shakespeare and traditional Folkloric dance, his students have been selected by the American High School Theatre Festival as one of only 40 schools from North America to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland this August, 2015. While his students are severely economically disadvantaged and labeled "at risk" for a myriad of reasons, they have honed their energies into theatre arts and created for themselves the opportunity of a lifetime in their performance of Romeo y Julieta at this year's Edinburgh Fringe.

Romeo y Julieta is a bi-lingual Romeo and Juliet translated by the students. Using Shakespeare's language and spoken in Original, Elizabethan Pronunciation along with colloquial Spanish, Monroe Theatre tells the story of "star crossed lovers" from rival Hispanic families living in San Fernando, CA.

This is not West Side Story. Romeo y Julieta touches on the, very real, inner-racial tension within the Hispanic community my students deal with daily.
