    Guest: “Lucy” of DatewithLucy.com

    in Relationships

    From Lucy about her blog:

I’m a 52 year old divorced woman dating online in Vancouver aka “the most beautiful city in the world”. As Lucy, I’m physically anonymous but my blog is completely revealing. Is it easy? No. Is it rewarding? So yes.

I have Boo, the greatest kid known to mankind who is never ever EVER allowed to read this, and my friends who support me like human Spanx. Seriously. I am one lucky gal in many respects.

In love however, I am still searching for the one who will stick around. I’ve met some nice guys and also some guys that I could have fallen in love with and I’ve gone from seeking a long term relationship to considering a new tattoo: “Date # 6. Anyone? Anyone?”

I’ve cried so hard I felt like I was coughing up a lung. I’ve laughed so hard I almost peed my panties. I’ve loved. I’ve learned. I have actually lived my life this year instead of watching from the sidelines and I wouldn’t change any of it for anything.

To follow my dating misadventures, read my blog “You’re Still Doable.” Then scroll down to the very bottom to begin at the very beginning when I was a pof. com virgin for the second time and don’t miss a single misstep, eureka moment or handy “do as I say…” touchstone that I sprinkle liberally throughout, just because I can. And yeah…I actually slip in some advice along the way as well. Huh. Take it as you will or not. We’re all grown ups here. Ish.

I was just thinking...Storytellers! Anansi, Aesop, and your Grandmother!

    in Education

The people in my family are griots.

A griot is a West African term for a storyteller of family, tribe, nation and cultural history.

A griot (/'gri.o?/; French pronunciation: ?[g?i.o]), jali or jeli (djeli or djéli in French spelling) is a West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet and/or musician. The griot is a repository of oral tradition and is often seen as a societal leader due to his traditional position as an adviser to royal personages. As a result of the former of these two functions, he is sometimes also called a bard.

"Though [the griot] has to know many traditional songs without error, he must also have the ability to extemporize on current events, chance incidents and the passing scene. His wit can be devastating and his knowledge of local history formidable".

Although they are popularly known as "praise singers", griots may use their vocal expertise for gossip, satire, or political comment.

Who do we have from our community that will have precise political commentary?

We are hidden away from commentary that will help our people because our time in front of the fire talking to our ancestors and our elders has been eliminated and the ideas of the dominate culture that is filtered through the televisions have become our concern and our touchstone.

Let's tell our stories and keep our culture alive!

Friday nite 5pm pacific time or 8pm eastern time

    The Ferguson Fallout Went National

    in Politics Conservative

It’s hard to find an uplifting angle on the events in Ferguson. Conservatives have drawn many familiar morals: that the media is ravenous for manufactured controversy, and will shamelessly exploit any tragedy to that end; that the Left will callously seize any opportunity to stoke racial tensions for political gain; that regrettable numbers of people prefer the satisfaction of rioting to the hard work of self-examination and community improvement.

Here is the point, in a nutshell. Minorities and impoverished Americans feel screwed by the system. They feel like pawns in the hands of a massive, incomprehensible, frighteningly invasive, and callously unfeeling bureaucratic system. This, surely, is something conservatives can understand. Middle-class conservatives are angry and frustrated because they feel screwed by “the system.” Guess what? The angry residents of Ferguson (and their sympathizers) feel the same way. We may have more common ground than we realize.
