“To victims of terrorism whose innocence was ripped out of them with the unseeing heartlessness of bomb shrapnel.”
A Mangled Marathon takes reports of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings a step beyond the terrorist blasts that killed three persons and injured more than 260.
It reports on the legal defense of the prime suspect, how victims are coping and the broader social implications of the bombings.
In a note to the reader, the author writes, “Although this book focuses on the April 15, 2013 bombings at the Boston Marathon, its victims and the prosecution of the prime suspect, it is equally about “lone wolf” terrorists. Lone wolves refer to terrorists who plot their attacks alone, usually with no organization to support them and no official links to violent groups. There is almost no way to know their next target until they strike. U.S. intelligence agencies call them perhaps the biggest terrorist threat to the United States and its allies.”
“But before the race was over, few people cared who won or lost. Boston’s Patriots Day, a day of festivities to celebrate the American Revolution, was about to become the latest nightmare in America’s ongoing war on terrorism…”
“The pungent smell of gunpowder hung in the air while shrapnel, ball bearings and nails littered the streets near the blast sites. Spectators left behind backpacks, cell phones and handmade signs with runners’ names. Doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital later treated one patient whose body had been pierced by 12 carpenter’s nails.”
A Mangled Marathon was written by veteran journalist and Washington, D.C., lawyer Tom Ramstack. He has reported on court cases for much of his three decades career as a journalist as well as defended a few criminal defendants.

Tom Vigneulle is running for the 6th Congressional District of Alabama.Tom decided to run for Congress because of his love for God, country, and the constitution. Like you, he is frustrated with Washington bureaucrats who continue to pass federal regulations that burden the middle class. From health care to small business, the American dream is under attack.
Tom will be that voice for the middle class. He is not a professional politician. He plans to be a citizen-legislator who will push back the federal government and empower the states so that government can be restored to its proper place within the means of the constitution.

The stated goal of the left as quoted my MSNBC's Melissa Perry:
"…we’ve always had a private notion of children, your kid is yours and totally your responsibility. We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children. So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to whole communities. "

The Total Tutor will interview om Derderian, author of The Boston Marathon: A Celebration of the World’s Premier Race.
om Derderian (1949-) is a coach, author and journalist. As a high school senior in Milford, he was accepted to Boston University, Northeastern, and UMass. Having won his school conference championship in the mile, he was a credible candidate for a spot on the cross-country and track teams at any of the three, but chose University of Massachusetts in Amherst and graduated in 1973 with a degree in English Literature and Journalistic Studies. He ran on the varsity track and cross country teams there. He ran a 4:25 mile and competed in the steeplechase.
A running success both on and off the roads, Tom's accomplishments include running in the Olympic trials in both 1972 and 1976, numerous New England road championships, a 2:19:04 Boston Marathon in 1975.
Derderian was in third place at the the 1981 Portsmouth (NH) Marketplace 10K, with the first two runners out of sight. When he came to an unmarked intersection, he took a wrong turn and brought a large pack of several hundred runners off course with him adding about two minutes to the course. The pack approached the finish line from the wrong direction, and the race officials had to reverse the finish line after the first two runners finished.
Derderian worked for Nike in the 1970s and 80s in product development and design. He earned several U.S. patents for his creative work in footwear and apparel.
Tom Derderian has been cross-country chairman for the USA Track and Field New England Association and vice president of the organization. Tom is a senior writer for New England Runner magazine. His work has appeared in Runner's World, Running Times, Marathon and Beyond, Track and Field News, and other running publications.
