Written by Laurence Holder, Directed by Rome Neal and Laurence Holder, Musical Score by Bill Lee.SYNOPSIS: Monk is a dramatic monologue by acclaimed African American playwright Laurence Holder that captures Monk’s bravura, genius, humor, and humanity. Holder’s script evokes Monk’s unorthodox jazz piano styling. The narrative chronicles the composer’s early life, his rise to prominence as a self-taught pianist and composer, his participation in the Civil Rights Movement, and his bouts of mental illness. Monk shares with "Duke" Ellington the distinction of being considered one of the 20th Century's greatest American composers. His vision was both ahead of its time and deeply rooted in African American musical traditions, ranging from the sacred music of the black church to the "stride" piano style of James P. Johnson, to the tonal freedom of the "avant garde." Monk helped usher in the bebop revolution, yet he also charted a new course for modern music.

Hollywood gave us Bill and Ted, two "excellent-dudes". The video gaming industry introduced us to "Postal-Dude": Well, in this edition of Johanna's Dialogue With Divinity, we introduce you to Dada Nabhaniilana "The Monk-Dude".
Dada Nabhaniilananda (a yoga monk, meditation instructor, award winning song-writer, musician & author) was born in New Zealand. During his early life he studied classical music and poetry. At the age of 11 he started composing music for the piano, and his teachers had high hopes of him becoming a concert pianist. However, during his time as a University student he developed a deep interest in Eastern mysticism.
In 1975 he left his native land for Australia, and later Nepal and India where he studied the disciplines and philosophy of Yoga and Meditation within sight of the Himalayas, and was ordained as a Yoga Monk of Ananda Marga in 1979.
Dada currently lives in the US where he tours occasionally, performing and teaching at Yoga Centres, Festivals and conferences, Universities and New Thought Churches. In 2007 he performed in New York with Premik Tubbs, who has played with Santana, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Whitney Houston and host of other greats.
Dada is currently based in California, where he teaches a course at UC Berkeley in Yogic Meditation: A Technology for Conscious Evolution, writes new songs, and is working on a comic science fiction novel.
Today, we'll explore what Dada refers to as "The Revolution Of Love". We will be taking your calls as well.

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, Franciscan Capuchin martyr. He was born Mark Rey in Sigmaringen, Germany, in 1577. A practicing lawyer, he traveled across Europe as a tutor to aristocrats, but then he started defending the poor. In 1612, he became a Franciscan Capuchin monk, taking the name of Fidelis. He was missionary to Grisons, Switzerland, and he also served as the head of the Congregation for the Spreading of the Faith.
He was so successful that local Protestants claimed that he was a spy for the Austrian Emperor. Fidelis was stabbed to death in a church in Seewis. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV.

Hybrid Jazz has always strived to show class, dignity and variety with each episode. What you'll hear on 7/22/14 takes all of that to a new level. Helen Sung has been captivating listeners - via recording or live - since she emerged on the New York scene in the late 90's. But I'm getting ahead of myself ;)
Born to Chinese immigrants in Houston, our guest was playing piano at five. Her teacher was strict and permitted Helen to play only Classical music - which she did throughout her education at the respected Houston High School of Performing and Visual Arts. Her motivation for college: to teach and to perform when possible. All that changed when she saw Harry Connick, Jr., on stage - in Helen's last year of University of Texas at Austin.
The transition was swift. Obsessed with visualizing Harry's fingers on the piano, Helen got a hold of Everything-That-Is-Jazz: from Jelly Roll Morton to Keith Jarrett. She received dual degrees in Texas, but her eye was on the inaugural program at the Thelonious Monk Institute in Boston. It was mutual love - Helen's unique talent was now under the watchful eye of Artistic Director, Ron Carter. She toured with the Cream of the Jazz Crop - across the water with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. It changed her life. And ours who are fans.
That move to New York cemented what many already knew, including Wynton Marsalis, who now has HIS eye on where Helen Sung will land next. Terri Lyne Carrington knows, Helen having been a key component in the award-winning "Mosaic Project" in 2011. The Kennedy Center realizes her power, too - she is a recipient of the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition.
Her sixth project, "Anthem For a New Day" is brilliant and brave. We could go ON for days about Helen Sung - but let HER tell her story: on 7/22/14 :)
