Our guest will be Bob Reynolds, the grandson of boat builder Scott J. Matthews, who did the Great Loop in 1906. Bob provided photos and his grandfather's written account of the journey for a new documentary. Below is the info from a press release about the documentary, and a preview can be seen here: http://www.matthewsboatownersassoc.com/
"In 1890, Scott J. Matthews founded the Matthews Boat Company in Bascom, Ohio. Fifteen years later, in 1906, Matthews, designed and built a 70 foot yacht. This vessel was capable of taking himself, and family of four, plus two others, on a 9,000 mile trip.
The adventure, of almost one year, transversed the eastern half of the United States, which is now referred to as the "Great Loop". This trip was a "first" for a private yacht and its success resulted in moving the Matthews Company to Port Clinton in 1906.
This past year, in collaboration with the Maritime Museum of Sandusky, a documentary was made. It includes many of the original photos taken along the way. The narrative is based on the written account of Scott Matthews."
Christopher Joel will be "In" The Thomas Loop Radio Show on WJJL-1440AM Niagara Falls/Buffalo, NY - a podcast will soon follow the live broadcast at around 1pm on 11/26 - on http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thomaslooptm-
Here is Chris's bio from his home page at www.christopherjoel.net - I've been performing throughout Western New York for over 3-1/2 years with solo and various musical projects. Aside from my solo acoustic shows, I currently perform with my acoustic duo 'THE CT SCAN' (Check out The CT Scan section here on my website) as well as playing drums in a new project called "007".
With my acoustic shows, I stay true to my motto "acoustic music...the way it's meant to be heard". You won't hear any extra music or noises unless it's me making them. In a recent video from one of my performances (in the multimedia section) you will hear someone say "Now that's a one man band". You also won't see a laptop or a music stand in front of me looking down at them; I learn words and music. As an entertainer, I always give 110% at every performance. I thrive on audience participation/interaction and they are the reason I get to do what I love doing.
Come to a show and you'll see...seeing is believing...

Wednesday's edition of The Thomas Loop Radio Show on AM-1440, WJJL - features an interview with author over the phones, Jim Gourley - in support of his new book, The Race Within - Passion, Courage, and Sacrifice at The Ultraman Triathlon. The book can be accessed on www.triumphbooks.com. At the top of the broadcast - I'll be over the phones talking conference playoff hockey with Head Coach of Buffalo State College Men's Hockey Program, Nick Carriere.
Overview of The Race Within -
The Ultraman Triathlon, one of the most remarkable endurance races in the world, is a three-day, 320-mile race that circumnavigates the Big Island of Hawaii. With only 40 competitors allowed in each year, this invitation-only event hosts some of the most superlative athletes on the planet. The Race Within discusses the 30-year history of the sport and race director Jane Bockus, former Pan Am flight attendant who has never done a triathlon, yet has dedicated herself to keeping the event true to its founding spirit for decades. This book follows Jane, her assistants, and a small cast of athletes through an entire year—from the end of the 2012 Ultraman to the 2013 event—and shows how they faced new challenges to the growth and well-being of the event, and were forced to question if old traditions could survive in a world of constantly-evolving sports entertainment. Granted full access to the race and the athletes, author Jim Gourley presents a look at this unique event and examines what it means to truly love sports.
