Today's guests are Fran Orenstein and Frances Pauli:
Fran Orenstein: Fran Orenstein, author of ten fiction books for kids, teens and adults, as well as numerous academic and professional articles and papers. Fran Orenstein, Ed.D., award-winning author and poet, wrote her first poem at age eight and submitted a short story to a magazine at age twelve. Fran has been a teacher, written professionally as a magazine editor/writer, counseled people with disabilities, and also wrote political speeches, newsletters, legislation, and promotional material while working for New Jersey State Government for twenty-two years. She has written academically and wrote professional papers on gender equity and violence prevention, which she presented at national and international conferences.
Frances Pauli writes speculative fiction, usually with touches of humor or romance, which means, of course, that she has trouble choosing sides.
She's always been a fan of things outside the box, odd, weird or unusual, and that trend follows through to her tales which feature aliens, fairies, and even, on occasion, an assortment of humans.

We all agree: Ebola is scary, and the news that two healthcare workers in Dallas have contracted the disease is very disturbing.
But the media coverage is not helping the situation. Fear sells papers and gets people to watch the news -- but reporting every rumor as if it is an inevitable disaster is not giving the public the information they need to understand the situation. Neither is politicization of it by GOP candidates who clamor for closing the borders (which would not help) or appointing a "czar" (hey, Sen. McCain, you mean like a surgeon general?) -- or accusing the President of trying to make the US like Africa. How about looking at how austerity has slashed the budgets of the agencies we entrust to ensure public health?
MOMocrats Cynematic, Karoli and Donna Schwartz Mills review the latest news on Ebola and election politics from a progressive POV, also touching on the races in Kentucky and Texas. Produced by Engender Media Group.

Forging Freedom: Black Women and the Pursuit of Liberty in Antebellum Charleston
For black women in antebellum Charleston, freedom was not a static legal category but a fragile and contingent experience. A deeply researched social history, Forging Freedom reveals the ways in which black women in Charleston acquired, defined, and defended their own vision of freedom.
Drawing on legislative and judicial materials, probate data, tax lists, church records, family papers, and more, Myers creates detailed portraits of individual women while exploring how black female Charlestonians sought to create a fuller freedom by improving their financial, social, and legal standing. Examining both those who were officially manumitted and those who lived as free persons but lacked official documentation, Myers reveals that free black women filed lawsuits and petitions, acquired property (including slaves), entered into contracts, paid taxes, earned wages, attended schools, and formed familial alliances with wealthy and powerful men, black and white--all in an effort to solidify and expand their freedom. Never fully free, black women had to depend on their skills of negotiation in a society dedicated to upholding both slavery and patriarchy. Forging Freedom thus examines the many ways in which Charleston's black women crafted a freedom of their own design instead of accepting the limited existence imagined for them by white Southerners.
Amrita Chakrabarti Myers earned her doctorate in American History from Rutgers University. A historian of the black female experience, she is interested in race, gender, sexuality, rights, freedom, and citizenship and the ways in which these constructs intersect with one another in the lives of black women in the Old South. She is currently Associate Professor of History and Gender Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
