A Talk With Julia Butterfly Hill and Dave Stringer

    in Spirituality

For 738 days Julia Butterfly Hill lived in the canopy of an ancient redwood tree, called Luna, to help make the world aware of the plight of ancient forests. Her courageous act of civil disobedience gained international attention for the redwoods as well as other environmental and social justice issues and is chronicled in her book The Legacy of Luna: The Story of a Tree, a Woman, and the Struggle to Save the Redwoods.

Dave Stringer has been widely profiled in publications all over the world as one of the most innovative artists of the new Kirtan movement. Stringer’s sound marries the transcendent mysticism of traditional Indian instruments with the exuberant, groove-oriented sensibility of American gospel.

Join us as Richard talks with Julia about her work since her experience with Luna, and with Dave about the story behind the music.  We will even share some music from his newest album.

A conversation you won't want to miss!

Scottscope Talk Radio 8/1/2015: The Rise of the Rogue Nation!

    in Entertainment

On this week’s edition of Scottscope Talk Radio, the roundtable reviews Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation!  Could this be Ethan Hunt’s most impossible mission yet?  Is the franchise only getting better with each successive entry?  Has Christopher McQuarrie succeeded where John Woo supposedly failed?  Did he manage to top both Brad Bird and J.J. Abrams?  Could Rogue Nation be the best pure action film of the summer?  Are spy films undergoing a renaissance this year?  Who should be handed the directorial reigns for the IMF’s next cinematic outing?  Is Tom Cruise getting too old to play the lead in this series?

The roundtable will also be reviewing Ant-Man! Is the troubled history of the production evident in the final product? Would Marvel Studios be better off right now if they would have let Edgar Wright have his way? Just where does Scott Lang rank among his MCU counterparts? Is he a first stringer, or a bench-warmer? Is the film a pleasant surprise, or is it the first real chink in Marvel’s seemingly impregnable armor? Now that phase II of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has officially come to a close, how does it stack up to phase I?

Helen Stringer Making Reading a Fearless Experience for Kids

    in Family

Joining Bill today on KOKS Live is Helen Stringer to talk about: Fear, Fright and Fantasy - Making Reading a Fearless Experience for Kids!
Frightful entertainment is a longstanding tradition that goes back before stories were ever written.  Scary tales told by old uncle Harry, ghost stories around the campfire, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, monster movies, and murder mysteries and every horror and suspense tale on paper and film are all part of entertainment by fright.  Unfortunately, younger kids who are unable to separate the tale from the truth are also exposed, and often truly frightened by media and second-hand tales from older kids.  How do we make fearless sense of the realistic non-reality of stories that are made to scare kids senseless?  Ask a storyteller!
A storyteller since her Liverpool, England childhood, Helen Stringer’s first job was researching the family history of the Earls of Sefton at their estate, Croxteth Hall. The vast, empty old mansion, opened to the public for tours, became a the buildings in her books. In America, Helen attended film school, worked in the entertainment industry and then at an entertainment law firm. Like so many writers, her writing was done second shift. While working and learning how the industry works, Helen began working on SPELLBINDER, getting great advice from a partner in the firm. Helen now lives in a barn at the back of her parents’ house with a bunch of cats and a ton of books.  Her books, Spellbinder and Belladonna are intended to stir the imagination of middle-schoolers on either side of the pond.

A Conversation with Helen Stringer author of Spellbinder

    in Lifestyle

Today's guest is Liverpool native and author Helen Stringer. Helen came across the pond to the west coast to attend film school and work in the film industry.
Now a resident of the Bay Area, Helen has entered the world of YA novels. Her book, Spellbinder features the main character Belladonna Johnson who can see ghosts. It’s a trait she’s inherited from her mother’s side of the family, like blue eyes or straight hair. And it’s a trait she could do without, because what twelve-year-old wants to be caught talking to someone invisible?
Helen has an uncanny ability to think and write in the tone young aults can relate to. Tune in as we find out what inspires her to write, how she got into the publishing industry and what advice she has for aspiring YA novelists everywhere.

She's also written the Midnight Gate. Join us as she talks about the world of young adult fantasy and what inspires her.
