The Role of the Church in Community Development

    in Non-Profit

Today’s episode is “The Role of Church and Community Development”.  We will discuss the history of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and its impact on community and society in particular and the role of the Church, in general, and its responsibility to community.

Our guest for today is Rev. Albert D. Tyson III, the Presiding Elder of the North District, Chicago Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. The AME Church was founded in 1787, and has a mission to minister to the social, spiritual, and physical development of all people.

Elder Tyson is highly involved in the AME Church, and the community and civic affairs of Chicago and beyond.  His resume is extensive, and time does not permit me to share it all, but here are a few highlights.  Elder Tyson is a member of the Board of Examiners of the Chicago Conference African Methodist Episcopal Church. He has served as the Vice-President and and the Parliamentarian of the Board of Directors for the Interfaith Organizing Project (IOP).  Elder Tyson also has served as the Treasurer, and eventually, the President, of the Near Westside Community Development Corporation (NWSCDC). He is a former member of the Board of Trustees for Chicago City Colleges and was recently appointed as a commissioner with the Chicago Public Building Commission.

CAN A CHURCH GIVE OUT CONDOMS?

    in Religion

How should the church or Christians do outreach? Is the goal to "show LOVE" or show Christ? Are those terms mutually exclusive? Is the goal to be relatable, cutting edge or relevant or a witness to those who are lost? What is the purpose condemnation or a ministry of reconciliation? What if the person doesn't smoke cigarettes but instead is addicted to marijuana, cocaine or meth; do you give them a nickel bag instead of Newports? What if the person doesn't need condoms but is addicted to going to the strip club, do you give them a stack of $1 Bills? WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE? In this show we discuss the biblical precedence that Jesus set with outreach ministry when dealing with those who he encountered in the streets. God is not going to "tell us to do something" that is opposite than HIS WORD. TUNE IN and call in on Tuesday Feb. 9th at 12 PM EST. for Break Bread Online bible study, where unlike Sway the bible does "have the answers", we just need to read it in context to find truth.

Church membership, Biblical Misuse, and the Invention of the Palestinians

    in Christianity

In today's broadcast, Dr. Randy White answers three question:

Why do churches have sermons and series on such soft, non-Biblical topics, like “How to Succeed in this New Year?” What should I do if I am part of a church like this?
Where in Scripture is church membership prescribed and does Christ's teaching on church discipline carry over into the church age?
How do we know if we are mis-using a Bible verse by taking it out of context—such as we often do with Jeremiah 29:11? Can we not still draw application and comfort from such verses? Is it legitimate to have a “verse of the day”?
Was Israel renamed Palestine in the 20th century or in Biblical times? Did the Romans do this?

Family Matters: The Christian Family and the Husband's Role - Part II.

    in Christianity

The Christian family has a unique role, by God's design. Based on today's standards, one might question that. Couples and their children are taking a closer look at what family life is meant to be and can be.

Today, the battle for the family is evident! And, the family has become a target of humanism – the amoral, atheistic philosophy that pervades our whole culture. So the questions are, "How shall we go about protecting our home and our families? And what must we do?”

We need to know what God intended and purposed for the family. Families have to be aware of and discern the influences that saturate our daily life – all those things that are contrary to God's Word. Then, once we know, believe and accept these, we can make a deliberate decision to live by God's standards.

Our goal is to uncover the importance of the family and its role. We will discuss the number one enemy of the family. We will also examine the role of husband, wife, and children.  And, lastly, we ask that you please pray with us about how to survive the battle of the family.

Join us for our next Hope for Today podcast and tune in for the entire "Family Matters" series, over the next several weeks. Our hope is for you and us to live out the role of family, as God intended.

Addressing the Pink Elephant: The Black Church and the LGBT Community.

    in Christianity

No matter where you fall on the spectrum, all of us need to strongly consider and dialogue about how we will do ministry in a world that will no longer define marriage and sexuality by traditional terms.

The overall objective of this conversation is NOT to force a change in people's opinions or theologies; the main purpose is to begin the much-needed dialogue on the realities of doing ministry with the LGBT community in mind.  Whether you affirm or deny homosexuality theologically, we can all agree all people are worthy of experiencing God's love; and we must admit that the church has traditionally been a very hostile and hypocritical place for LGBT individuals. How do we do ministry today in a way that upholds our biblical convictions (as diverse as they may be), and still demonstrate love to a community (as diverse as it may be)?

    Special Guest: Pastor Dwight Radcliff

Pastor Radcliff holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Studies (with highest honors) from the Long Beach Bible College, and a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary (with an emphasis in Multi-Cultural Ministry/African-American Church Studies). He is currently pursuing his PhD.

    Special Guest: Pastor Curt Thomas

Pastor Curt Thomas is a graduate of Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education.  He furthered his study in ministry by completing a certificate program with Interdenominational Theology Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia. He incorporates the knowledge and skills garnered from his studies in his approach to educating, counseling, andempowering his church members and community members at large. Pastor Thomas serves as the Senior Pastor of The Renewed Church of Los Angeles.
